The romantic comedy show “Rent-a-Girlfriend,” based on the Weekly Shonen Magazine Manga by creator Reiji Miyajima, was one of the most surprising standouts of the 2020 summer anime season. Though the manga was a huge hit in China (the Abema Times claimed that “Rent-a-Girlfriend” had taken the top place as the number one manga with 700,000 digital sales in August of last year), the anime has reached new heights. Miyajima himself tweeted that the series had risen to fourth place among Netflix Japan’s most popular shows.
“Rent-a-Fiancée” follows Kazuya Kinoshita, a 20-year-old man who, after being dumped by his girlfriend, Mami Nanami, decides to use a dating app that allows him to rent a girlfriend. He leases the gorgeous Chizuru Mizuhara, but after reflecting on how inauthentic the experience was, he gives her a bad rating.
When Kazuya presents Chizuru to his bedridden grandmother, who takes a shine to the girl, the situation takes a turn for the worst. Kazuya and Chizuru also find out that they live next door to each other.
Fans wondered if there will be a Season 2 as Season 1 came to a close. Even the show’s producer, Taiki Kakizaki, tweeted at one point, urging fans to pre-purchase the Blu-ray to generate enough interest for a second season.
Season 2 of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” has been confirmed. So far, here’s what we know.
Is there a Release Date for Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 2?
Season 2 of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” was officially revealed not long ago. Crunchyroll, the streaming service for the show, announced that a second season had been confirmed just as the first was coming to an end in 2020. At the time, however, no release date had been set.
Thankfully, that time frame has decreased, with Crunchyroll reporting that Season 2 of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” will be released in July 2022, but the exact date is uncertain.
Fans may have hoped for a 2021 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic may have forced the series to postpone the publication of a second season the year after Season 1. As reported by Nikkei Asia, the epidemic has wreaked havoc on Japanese animation studios, so a 2022 release makes logical.
Season 1 of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” debuted in Japan in July and the United States in late August, and Season 2 could follow a similar course in 2022, with staggered release dates based on country — or they could debut simultaneously.

Who will appear in Season 2 of Rent-a-Girlfriend?
There has been no official announcement about the cast of Season 2 of Rent-a-Girlfriend. However, it’s a reasonable guess that the majority of the cast from Season 1 will return. After all, a special short film featuring many of the primary anime voice cast was produced to coincide with the formal announcement of the show’s second season.
Sora Amamiya played Chizuru Mizuhara, Aoi Yki played Mami Nanami, Nao Tyama played Ruka Sarashina, Rie Takahashi played Sumi Sakurasawa, Shun Horie played Kazuya Kinoshita, and Yukari Nozawa played Kazuya’s grandma Nagomi Kinoshita, according to Anime News Network.
Season 2’s production staff appears to be substantially unchanged, with TMS Entertainment serving as the studio behind “Rent-a-Girlfriend” and animation director Kazuomi Koga returning. According to Crunchyroll, Kanna Hirayama is returning as an anime character designer, as they created the aesthetics for the teaser video.
What is the plot of Season 2 of Rent-a-Girlfriend?
Season 2 of “Rent-a-Girlfriend” has yet to get an official plot outline. The first season, on the other hand, didn’t stray far from its manga roots, closely following the first six volumes. And, given that the manga contains nearly 190 chapters and 19 volumes, with no indication of a finale yet, there’s a lot for the new season to draw upon.
Season 1 came to a close with a flurry of exciting occurrences in the final episode. Mami rented Chizuru and then questioned her about Kazuya, admitting that she was aware of the truth about her and Kazuya’s relationship.
Chizuru, on the other hand, denied this, claiming that Kazuya was indeed her lover. She then questioned Mami if she ever considered Kazuya to be her genuine love, but she didn’t get much of a reaction. Later, Kazuya meets with Chizuru and admits that he wants her as a girlfriend, but then clarifies that he just meant as a rental girlfriend.
Season 2 is set to go deeper into Kazuya, Chizuru, and Mami’s relationship. And, while the first season teased these characters’ true feelings, the second season is expected to provide them more chances to express their true romantic impulses.
