Mariska Magdolna Hargitay is an American actress, director, producer, and philanthropist. She is the daughter of actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay and actress Jayne Mansfield and has won numerous awards including the Golden Globe Award, People’s Choice Award, and Primetime Emmy Award.

Mariska Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004 to support survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. She was motivated to start the organization by a profound spiritual experience she had at the age of 15 while swimming with dolphins off the coast of Hawaii.

The foundation has provided therapeutic programs combining activities such as yoga, meditation, massage, journaling, and swimming with dolphins to over 5,000 women and children in New York, Los Angeles, and Hawaii as of November 2010. In November 2009, Hargitay and the Joyful Heart Foundation collaborated to create healing and wellness kits for women who had experienced domestic violence and were staying in domestic violence shelters in Los Angeles County.
