In December 2018, Strickland was riding a motorcycle in Los Angeles when he was hit by a car, which knocked him out. He was hurt badly in the accident and had to have knee surgery.

On October 31, 2020, at UFC Fight Night 181, Strickland was supposed to fight Wellington Turman again after a two-year break.

At UFC Fight Night: Felder vs. dos Anjos on November 14, 2020, Strickland fought Brendan Allen. By a technical knockout, he beat his opponent. For this win, he won the Performance of the Night award.

Strickland was supposed to face Uriah Hall at UFC 265 on August 7, 2021. But on June 4, 2021, Hall’s fight was moved to the main event on UFC on ESPN 28 on July 31, 2021. During the training camp for this fight, he got into a fight with his sparring partner, Orlando Sanchez. He said Sanchez was using a dangerous submission move that could hurt him. Hall lost to Strickland by a unanimous decision.

At UFC 268 on November 6, 2021, Strickland was supposed to fight Luke Rockhold, who had been the UFC Middleweight Champion.

On February 5, 2022, at UFC Fight Night 200, Strickland fought Jack Hermansson. A split decision decided who won the fight. Twenty-one of the twenty-one news outlets picked Strickland to win. Many people didn’t agree with Judge Sal D’Amato’s scorecard, which gave the fight to Hermansson 48-47.
