Skylar Grey Divorce

Skylar Grey had to sell her entire record collection in order to pay for her divorce from Todd Mandel.

“I’ve been going through a divorce and a litigation since 2017, and it’s been emotionally and financially killing me,” Grey, 36, revealed in a Variety interview published Monday.

“Last year, in 2021, we finally sorted it.” To pay for the settlement, I had to sell my library, which was a shame because songs like “Love the Way You Lie” and “Coming Home” are my kids.

Grey penned Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” and Diddy’s “Coming Home” in 2010. She also played a key role in Dr. Dre’s Grammys performance of “I Need a Doctor” in 2011.

“No one can argue I didn’t write those songs just because I don’t hold the rights to them anymore,” Grey told Variety. “I didn’t want to sell them, but that was the only way I could get away from my history.”

The singer never intended to give up the rights to her hits, but she is grateful that they aided her divorce.

“I feel so much better now that the case is ended. She explained, “I don’t have to speak with lawyers every day, and I don’t have to pay all these legal costs.” “Right now, all I’m focused on is creating a new catalog, new money, and new opportunities.”

Grey is enthusiastic about the future, but she is also proud of her previous accomplishments.

“Song will always be essential to me, and I will always adore them, but things have changed now.” “Unfortunately, much of the money I got for my catalog went to taxes and my ex-husband,” she joked, “and I don’t get any of that money now when one of those songs is utilized in a movie or something else.”

“It’s like you’ve worked your whole life and then you realize, ‘OK, I have to give away the majority of this.’ But I didn’t have a choice. I might not have been able to get out of the case if I hadn’t been able to do something like that.

Grey has resurfaced in the public eye with the publication of her new album, “Grey,” which she describes as a “cathartic release” following her divorce.

“It reflects a lot of how I’ve felt throughout the years,” she explained. “And it was difficult; there was a lot of turmoil; I was unhappy; I went through a lot of nonsense.” As a result, I believe this album reflects how I felt and what I was experiencing at the time.”
