Mathew Barzal known as Mat Barzel was born on May 26, 1997, and he is a center for the Canadian ice hockey team. He plays in the National Hockey League for the New York Islanders (NHL).
At the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Islanders chose Barzal with the 16th pick in the first round. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best NHL rookie in 2017–18. He was the fifth person from the Island to win this award.
On October 4, 2022, Barzal signed a new contract with the Islanders. It was for eight years and for $73.2 million.

Mat Barzel’s Professional Life
In 2010, Barzal’s team from Burnaby played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. The Seattle Thunderbirds picked him first overall in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. In the 2013–14 season, Barzal’s first with the Thunderbirds, he scored 14 goals and had 40 assists for a total of 54 points. Before the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he was rated as the seventh-best player in the league.
In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Islanders took Barzal with the 16th overall pick. On September 10, he got a three-year deal with the Islanders as a rookie.
On October 15, 2016, Barzal made his NHL debut.
Barzal’s first NHL game with more than one point was against the Minnesota Wild on October 26, 2017, when he scored a goal and had an assist. In the final seconds of the Islanders’ 6–4 loss, he scored the second goal of his career.
On December 23, 2017, Barzal had his first three-goal game and his first game with two or more goals.
Barzal scored the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 3 of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. This gave the Islanders a 3–0 series lead over the Washington Capitals. The Islanders won the series 4–1 and moved on to the second round, where they played the Philadelphia Flyers and beat them in seven games.

The Islanders lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals in six games. The Lightning went on to win the Stanley Cup.
On January 11, 2021, Barzal is said to have signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Islanders.
