Sona Jobarteh is a Gambian-born British singer, songwriter, and musician who was born on October 17, 1983. She comes from one of the five main griot families in West Africa that play the kora, and she is the first professional female kora player from a griot family.
She is Tunde Jegede’s sister and Toumani Diabate’s cousin. Tunde Jegede is a famous kora player.

Is ‘Kora Player’ Sona Jobarteh Married?
Sona Jobarteh is a very open person at work, but she keeps to herself in her personal life. She’s never talked about her marriage or other relationships in public.
No one knows if she is married or not. We do know that she has a son who is 15 years old. In an interview with CBS News, she said, “I can talk to anyone, anywhere in the world, through music. I can’t do it any other way.”

She also teaches the tradition to her 15-year-old son Sidiki, who is a talented balafon player. And the next part of the griot’s past that connects it to its future.
The full name of her son is Sidiki Jobarteh-Codjoe. Codjoe seems to be his father’s last name.

About Sona Jobarteh Professional Career
She gave her first performance at the Jazz Café in London when she was only four years old. When she was young, she also played at several festivals.
As a student of music, she worked on orchestral projects like “River of Sound” with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Evelyn Glennie. She also worked on other projects with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the Milton Keynes City Orchestra, and the Viva Chamber Orchestra.
In 2002, she went to Vienna to perform with the well-known jazz singer Cleveland Watkiss. She was also part of his show in London at the Barbican, where he opened for Cassandra Wilson. She was also a part of Damon Albarn’s Mali Music Project, which Jools Holland heard later.
Her first album was called Afro-Acoustic Soul, and it had songs about love and social issues. Some of the songs on this album could be played on radio stations in Europe that play more traditional music. Fascia was her second child (2011). She is a guest performer on Ballake Sissoko’s 2021 album Djourou.
Jobarteh teaches the kora to people in London as well. She helped her father, Sanjay Jobarteh, start a music school in the Gambia. Her famous grandfather’s name was given to the school.
