American Rust Season 2 - Latest Updates on Release Date, Cast, Plot, and More!

Showtime’s “American Rust” had its debut on September 12, 2021. It is based on Philip Myers’ 2009 book of the same name and is set in the perfect setting for a crime drama: an impoverished Rust Belt community in Western Pennsylvania where individuals turn to crime out of desperation. As the ethically conflicted and eventually corrupted chief of police Del Harris, it starred Jeff Daniels in the title role. You wouldn’t be the first person to draw a similarity between that description and another 2021 Pennsylvania crime drama series on a premium cable network that starred an award-winning actor.

Despite the fact that “American Rust” properly reproduced the original material from Myers’ novel and despite its lackluster Season 1 rating (according to TV Series Finale), there was still plenty of possibility for the show to grow in Season 2 and beyond. Here is what we currently know about Season 2 of “American Rust,” which premiered its Season 1 finale episode on November 7 of last year.

When will American Rust Season 2 be available?

As of the end of January 2022, “American Rust” appears to be dead. The Pittsburgh publication Tribune-Review broke the news that Showtime has canceled “American Rust” on January 25 and published a statement from the cable network that provided extra context for their choice. According to the Tribune-Review, Showtime’s comment is as follows: “We can vouch for the fact that “American Rust” won’t be getting a second season. We want to express our gratitude to Boat Rocker, our outstanding showrunner Dan Futterman, the other fantastic writers, and our incredible cast, which is comprised of Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”

In July 2019, Showtime ordered “American Rust” for a full season after several years of development hell (via Variety). Season 1 ultimately started filming in March 2021 (through Trib-Live) and made its debut in September 2021 after several pandemic-related delays. Early November saw the end of the season, and as we all know, that also meant the end of the “American Rust” saga.

Who is in the second season cast of American Rust?

There won’t be Season 2 of “American Rust” because Showtime has terminated it as of late January 2022. As a result, fans of the Showtime series will have to bid a final farewell to Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, Bill Camp from “The Queen’s Gambit,” David Alvarez from “West Side Story,” Alex Neustaedter from “Colony,” and the rest of the outstanding ensemble cast.

Daniels makes his television debut as Del Harris, the police chief of a small town, in Season 1. Warehouse worker Grace Poe was played by Tierney as Del’s love interest, while Billy, who is left in a coma at the conclusion of Season 1, was portrayed by Neustaedter. Mark Pellegrino from “Supernatural” completed the Poe family as Virgil, Billy’s father, and Grace’s spouse.

Additionally, Alvarez portrayed Billy’s closest buddy Alex English, Camp made an appearance as Henry, Alex’s father, and Julie Mayorga as Lee, Alex’s sister, and Billy’s former lover. As Del’s subordinate Steve Park, played by Rob Yang (“Succession”), who was tipped for a greater part had Season 2 been confirmed, the episode came to a close.

What is the Season 2 storyline of American Rust?

Season 1 of “American Rust” concluded on so many cliffhangers that it felt quite evident where the program might have gone next, as we highlighted in our analysis of whether it would receive a second season. The major change is that Del is now trying to cover up a triple homicide that he committed after spending Season 1 looking into Billy for the death of cop-turned-drug dealer Pete Novick (Jim True-Frost). If you missed it, Del was forced to kill their 87-year-old cousin and two of Novick’s cronies out of self-defense. Steve Park, Del’s deputy, suspected him of being involved in the killings at the conclusion of Season 1.

Fans anticipated that Season 2 will feature the following storylines in light of these events: With Steve Park playing the part of Del, Del finds himself in Billy’s position and learns at the conclusion of Season 2 that Isaac English, a friend of Billy’s, killed Novick in order to protect Billy. Isaac was the true killer of Novick. Del made the decision to hide Isaac’s involvement.

The Poe home, which officially no longer exists, saw a dramatic ending to “American Rust.” To give herself a reason to be nearer Del, Grace set her own house on fire. Additionally, she attempted to unionize the staff at the warehouse where she worked, but her efforts were eventually unsuccessful. Billy was finally subjected to a brutal beating in prison that put him into a coma. There were other stories that “American Rust” Season 2 might have explored, all things considered.
