“Animal Kingdom” is an intriguing crime drama that blends complex family drama with weekly heists. Janine “Smurf” Cody (Ellen Barkin) is the fierce matriarch of a family of merciless career criminals who steal to make ends meet. The Codys will go to any length to maintain their idyllic lifestyle, including jeopardizing their youngest member, Joshua “J” Cody (Finn Cole), Smurf’s grandson.
Following the death of his mother and Smurf’s only daughter, Julia, the 17-year-old is made Smurf’s ward. Smurf rules the family with an iron fist, towering over her sons as she manages the gang and strives to keep the family afloat in their hometown in Southern California.
Throughout the show, we get flashbacks to Smurf’s youth (played by Leila George), as she establishes her own street gang and progresses to selling narcotics, laundering money, and murdering her rivals on her route to building her own crime empire.
“Animal Kingdom” has been renewed for a sixth and final season by TNT (per Deadline). When can fans expect to see it, what will it be about, and who will play the lead roles? Here’s what we know so far about Season 6 of “Animal Kingdom.”
Is there a release date set for Animal Kingdom Season 6?
Season 6 of “Animal Kingdom,” according to TNT’s first teaser, will premiere in 2022. There’s no news on which quarter the show will air in or whether it will stick to its regular time schedule. According to IMDb, “Animal Kingdom” is generally a summer program for TNT, with new episodes airing from May to August, but the show defied convention for Season 5 and aired from May to October 2021.
If the network wants to repeat the show’s previous five seasons’ popularity, it’s likely that “Animal Kingdom” will return on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST, with a May 2022 premiere date. The fifth season of “Animal Kingdom” was spread out over a longer period of time than any prior season, making it impossible to predict when the show will end. All schedules are, of course, subject to change.
Who will most likely appear in Animal Kingdom Season 6?
TNT has made no announcements concerning cast changes or additions ahead of Season 6’s premiere. However, given a number of unresolved narrative threads from Season 5, it’s simple to guess who will return for Season 6.
Leila George is expected to reprise her role as the younger Smurf, while Smurf’s three sons — Andrew “Pope” Cody (Shawn Hatosy), Craig Cody (Ben Robson), and Deran Cody (Jake Weary) — are also expected to return. Naturally, Finn Cole will reprise his role as J, while Jon Beavers and Rigo Sanchez will almost certainly reprise their roles as young Jake Dunmore and Manny, respectively, in the flashback realm.
There will presumably be more invasions from law enforcement officers, some of whom we’ve certainly previously seen, who are now on the trail of the Cody gang following a fairly nasty finding in the Season 5 finale.
Season 6 of Animal Kingdom might be about whatever you want it to be.
When “Animal Kingdom” returns for its sixth season, the Cody family will face some extraordinarily powerful foes. At the end of Season 5, the police find the body of Catherine Blackwell (Daniella Alonso), the late Barry “Baz” Blackwell (Scott Speedman), J’s biological father, and Smurf’s adoptive son.
Catherine is killed in Season 1 after Pope smothers her for stealing money from Smurf following a bad seduction attempt. Catherine’s body is discovered buried in a new home development in the Codys’ neighborhood. This piece of bad news may signal the start of a season of vengeance for the entire family.
After Smurf’s death, J and Deran ultimately agree to co-lead the Cody gang. Deran, the family’s black sheep who first opposes Smurf’s illicit operation, even agrees to help the gang launder money through his pub. Craig’s heroin addiction worsens, causing his long-term love, Renn (Christina Ochoa), to abandon him. When “Animal Kingdom” returns for its sixth and final season next year, all of these narrative elements will most certainly be resolved in a dramatic way.
