IS STAR TREK: DISCOVERY BEING CANCELLED?

Star Trek: Discovery might be coming to an end shortly.

Last month, the science fiction series, which is now showing the second half of its fourth season on Paramount+, was renewed for a fifth season. Despite the fact that the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service made no mention of season 5 being the final season, many Trekkies believe that the freshly released batch of episodes will be the series’ final instalment.

For one thing, some fans believe that Star Trek: Discovery season 5’s shorter episode count indicates that the series is coming to an end. The first season of the programme contains 15 episodes, season two has 14 episodes, and seasons three and four each has 13 episodes. Season 5 will, on the other hand, only contain ten episodes. However, given that the majority of the current and upcoming Star Trek series, including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, only have 10 episodes per season, it’s possible that Paramount+ only ordered 10 episodes for season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery for the sake of consistency.

Meanwhile, some fans are alluding to a July 2021 interview with series star Doug Jones on Inverse, in which the Saru actor said that Star Trek: Discovery was only supposed to last for five seasons. “They told me they had a five-year plan,” Jones recalled of his first discussions with the show’s creative staff at the time.

While it’s uncertain whether Star Trek: Discovery will follow its initial five-year schedule, Jones himself has remarked that he won’t be surprised if it doesn’t, given the show’s history of behind-the-scenes adjustments in recent years. Jones told Inverse in July, “That was like three showrunners ago.” “Those folks were no longer alive.” I’m sure [the series] could go on for a lot longer at this point. Or will continue on for a long time.”

Though reports that Star Trek: Discovery would be cancelled after season 5 are only hearsay at this point, the show’s termination seems unavoidable, as Paramount+ is already developing a few Star Trek spinoffs. For example, the long-awaited Star Trek: Section 31 and the recently announced Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are slated to take the place of any terminating Star Trek episodes.

Every Thursday at 3 a.m., a new episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 4 premieres on Paramount+. Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, on the other hand, is yet to be announced.
