Over the course of its three seasons on NBC, “New Amsterdam” has performed admirably. It’s a soap opera about Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), the new medical director of New Amsterdam Hospital. He’s juggling a shattered marriage, a cancer diagnosis, approaching fatherhood, and workplace problems. Dr. Goodwin is dealing with single fatherhood by the third season, which is presently airing on NBC, after losing his wife in a car accident in Season 2. On the job, he’s trying to keep up with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The sitcom received a three-season renewal in January, bringing the total number of seasons to five (via Variety). What may the fourth season have in store for fans, now that Season 3 has come to an end? Continue reading to learn more about “New Amsterdam’s” third season.
On July 1st, 2021, the following information was updated: We’ve kept you updated on Season 4’s release date and plot since Season 3 ended in June.
When is New Amsterdam Season 4 going to be released?
Season 3 of the show ended earlier this month, so we don’t yet know when Season 4 will premiere. Based on NBC’s propensity for starting the show in the fall, the second season is expected to premiere in September or October 2021, depending on whether or not there are any delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic planning. If that’s the case, the third season could be pushed back to March 2022 to accommodate all necessary safety precautions to protect the show’s cast and crew’s health.
According to Variety, the show averages 1.7 million viewers in live ratings and 4.6 million in Live+7 views, so the audience will be eager to see what the staff at New Amsterdam will do next.
Season 4 of New Amsterdam will feature who’s who in the cast.
There have been no cast additions or guest appearances announced. Dr. Goodwin (Janet Montgomery), Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims), Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), and Dr. Ignatius “Iggy” Frome (Tyler Labine) are all expected to return in the following season of the show.
Season 3 of “New Amsterdam” did, however, see the departure of one of the cast members. Anupam Kher (Dr. Vijay Kapoor) left the show at the launch of the third season, according to Deadline. “This past year has been traumatic for many individuals all around the world, including Dr. Kapoor,” Kher wrote on Instagram. “Being a part of this concert was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.
I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the New Amsterdam Family. I appreciate the audience’s love, support, and well wishes, especially for my wife, Kirron [Kirron Kher was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a kind of blood cancer, according to Deadline], who is currently undergoing treatment. I hope you will continue to follow along with me on my adventures and future projects.”
What will happen in Season 4 of New Amsterdam?
Because the show is still in the middle of production, there isn’t much information on where it will go after Season 3. However, COVID-19, like many other medical dramas, will likely maintain its focus on the characters’ continuous relationships.
In the aftermath of the death of his wife Georgia (Lisa O’Hare) in Season 2, Dr. Goodwin gradually but steadily comes to terms with his affections for Dr. Helen Sharpe. All of this is taking place while he works to modernize the hospital’s numerous outmoded methods, struggles with the fallout of his cancer battle, and raises his daughter, Luna.
Dr. Lauren Bloom has fallen in love with Leyla (Shiva Kalaiselvan), a former pediatrician from Pakistan who is forced to drive for an Uber-style ride-sharing service because she is not qualified to practice medicine in the United States. Dr. Floyd Reynolds recently called off his engagement to Evie (Margot Bingham), and Dr. Vijay Kapoor’s loss was felt throughout the institution.
Fans can expect a more optimistic season this season, according to Schulner, who told TV Insider: “I truly believe that as a result of this season and pandemic, there will be more joy, happiness, and love all around, and instead of fighting the pandemic’s oppression, our characters will have to fight for their happiness, finding it, and keeping it. ‘More Joy’ is the title of the first episode of Season 4, and it’s a proclamation for the upcoming season.”
