Nobody ever said being queen was easy, and Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) learns that lesson well in the USA Network original crime thriller Queen of the South. Teresa found herself frightened by the end of the show’s fourth season, which premiered on Netflix in June 2020, after relocating to New Orleans, outsmarting corrupt local politicians, and outmanoeuvring competing gangs.
However, just as Teresa is about to take a deep breath, an old ally appears to remind her that she isn’t out of the woods yet. Thankfully, the show’s cliffhanger will be resolved, since USA Network has renewed the show for a fifth season.
There are many moving pieces in a production like Queen of the South. Characters come and go, and Teresa is virtually always juggling various threats to her drug enterprise and her life at any given time. None of that appears to be changing in Season 5, based on what we know thus far.
Queen of the South Season 5 Trailer
What is the Queen of the South season 5 release date?
The fifth season of Queen of the South was announced by USA Network in August 2019, soon after the fourth season ended. Each season of the show has traditionally begun in June and ended in late August or early September. Season 5 was supposed to follow the same path as Season 4, but things haven’t gone as planned.
Season 5 will begin production in early March 2020, according to Newsweek, and will premiere in June. However, like most other film and television shoots this spring, Queen of the South’s second season was put on indefinite hold just a few weeks after it began filming. Thankfully, the cast and crew were able to resume shooting in November 2020, allowing for a debut in the first part of 2021.
According to Express UK, one of the fall shootings resulted in the injury of star Alice Braga. Braga posted a photo of the subsequent wrap on her hand, along with a funny caption about an action-packed season 5, so the damage doesn’t appear to be too significant. Hopefully, Braga is doing well and the series doesn’t suffer any further setbacks.
Season 5 of the show, according to a fan rumour, will premiere in March 2021, however that seems like a very quick turnaround given production only began in November. Season 5 of Queen of the South has yet to be announced, but based on what we know so far, we expect it will launch in early 2021.
Who will return to the Queen of the South cast for season 5?
Season 5 of Queen of the South has yet to get an official casting announcement from USA Network. Given how Season 4 concluded, we do know a few characters that will and will not be returning. To start, let’s get the big name out of the way: Alice Braga will reprise her role as Teresa Mendoza, the Queen.
Hemky Madera, who plays Teresa’s longstanding ally Pote Galvez, and Molly Burnett, who plays Teresa’s companion and confidant Kelly Anne Van Awken, are two more cast members who look likely to return. Burnett has been promoted to series regular, so expect to see a lot more of Kelly Ann, the violent husband-killing informant, in season 5. We wouldn’t be shocked if Vera Cherny reprises her role as Russian drug dealer Oksana Volkova, who was first introduced in season 4 and had a key role in Teresa’s agreement with the Russian mob.
Peter Gadiot, who plays James Valdez, Teresa’s ally who was primarily missing until the last moments of season 4, has also confirmed his return for season 5. Gadiot was absent for the majority of Season 4 owing to schedule problems, but we can expect him to return when the programme returns, according to showrunner Ben Lobato. “We decided to bring him back in and get him ready for Season 5,” Lobato stated.
Season 5 will be devoid of a couple of regular cast members. Both Julian Silva (who portrayed Tony Parra) and Alfonso Herrera (who played Javier Jimenez) died in season 4, therefore they are unlikely to return.
Is there a trailer for season 5 of Queen of the South?
Thankfully, there is some Queen of the South sweetness to enjoy in the interim before the series returns for its second season.
Despite the fact that Queen of the South season 5 only had a few weeks of filming before going on break, USA Network has published a short teaser that provides viewers with an idea of where things will head next season.
