Another show to watch. The coronavirus epidemic forced the cancellation of GLOW’s fourth season, but cocreators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch are returning.

They reunited for the new Apple TV+ series Roar, based on Cecelia Ahern’s short story collection of the same name. The tone is significantly different from their previous show, but it stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and Chris Lowell.

Each episode of Roar features a unique cast and plot, but Brie, 39, and Lowell, 37, share one. If you think about it, Chris and Ali didn’t have a lot of solo scenes in GLOW,” Flahive said on Thursday, April 14. “It was kind of amusing to me because they didn’t interact much on our prior show. But they were clearly delighted to see each other.”

The Mad Men veteran was thrilled to return with Flahive and Mensch while playing a role very different from her GLOW one. This role was a lot of fun because she’s a polar opposite of Ruth in many aspects, including physicality.

Nicole Kidman, who won an Emmy for her role in Big Little Lies, is also in the Roar cast. The 54-year-old Oscar winner is an executive producer with Blossom Films.

“It’s basically stress multiplied by 100,” the Bombshell actress told Marie Claire Australia in October 2020. Intensely painful at times, ecstatically joyful at others. Because I care so much about it, I worry at 3 a.m., which is a bad trait. But I think, ‘Well, we’re doing this!’”

Roar is the latest Kidman project based on a book. It features 30 stories, each based on a different titular woman, such as “The Woman Who Was Pigeonholed” or “The Woman Who Smiled.”

Season 1 only features eight of these stories, so if it gets renewed, there will be many more to select from. In an interview published Friday, Mensch said of translating the book for TV, “It was something truly different and new for us.” “We’re realists. But we wanted to push.”

The Cast Of The Roar Series

Cynthia Erivo, Issa Rae, Judy Davis, Meera Syal, Merritt Wever, Fivel Stewart, and Kara Hayward join Kidman, Gilpin, Brie, and Lowell in the cast. Daniel Dae Kim, Jake Johnson, Hugh Dancy, Simon Baker, Ego Nwodim, Riki Lindhome, Jason Mantzoukas, Alfred Molina, Jillian Bell, Peter Facinelli, and others star in tiny roles on the show.

The Plot Of The Roar Series

Each episode follows a diverse cast of characters, but they’re all connected by magical realism. Kidman, for example, portrays a woman who eats old photographs to reconnect with her past, while Wever’s character begins dating a duck after a run of unsuccessful romances.

The Crew Of The Roar Series

Several notable directors, such Channing Godfrey Peoples, who directed Miss Juneteenth, and Rashida Jones, who codirected a documentary on her father, Quincy Jones, were selected by Flahive and Mensch to direct episodes of Roar. The music for the show was composed by Isobel Waller-Bridge, Phoebe’s older sister.

What It Is Formed On

PS, I Love You, and Thanks for the Memories are only a few of Ahern’s other works. While the play is based on her book, some of the titles of the stories have been modified or reduced. Roar was described by Kirkus Reviews as “a crisp, dazzling collection of stories” when it was released in 2018.
