According to two people who are familiar with the discussions, Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul who controls Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the British Sun tabloid, among a host of other media properties, and Jerry Hall, a former actress, and supermodel, have decided to divorce after being married for six years.
This marks the end of Murdoch’s fourth marriage, which was also the shortest of his marriages. In March of 2016, when Murdoch was 85 years old and Hall was 59, the couple wed in a ceremony that took place in London and resembled a boldface blended family portrait. In attendance were her children, whose father is Mick Jagger, and his children, who include the current CEO of Fox Corporation. The ceremony was attended by her children and Mick Jagger.
The New York Times was the first publication to break the news of the divorce. A representative for Murdoch’s company declined to comment on the matter. It was not possible to get in touch with a representative from Hall.
As representatives of two worlds of notoriety that couldn’t be more different from one another, the pair was constantly the focus of curiosity in the media. At a New York City gala not long after their wedding, the Daily Mail reported that “the couple couldn’t keep the smiles off their faces.” This occurred shortly after the couple had tied the knot. Years later, the same publication released paparazzi images of a “romantic evening supper” in London. The photos were taken in London.
However, Murdoch’s marriage to Hall was still successful in avoiding the majority of the media tension that he experienced during his previous union with Wendi Deng. A protester attempted to throw a foam pie at Rupert Murdoch during a parliamentary hearing in 2011 in the United Kingdom. Deng, a former employee of News Corporation who met Murdoch at a company function, famously knocked down the protester. And it was during this marriage, which lasted from 1999 to 2014, that Murdoch changed the provisions of the trust that governs the media empire that his family has built up to make room for his two daughters with Deng. Lachlan Murdoch, Murdoch’s oldest son and heir apparent at the time, left the family firm and went to Australia around the same time; he has since returned as a senior leader of the Murdoch empire.
After 32 years of marriage and three children, Murdoch finalized his divorce from his second wife, Anna, in 1999. Anna was a journalist who had previously worked for a newspaper. With his first wife, Patricia Booker, to whom he was married from 1956 until 1967, he had one kid. The marriage lasted until 1967.
Even while a divorce from Hall is highly unlikely to have any effect on the trust, some who are close to the older Murdoch are concerned about how it would influence the care that he pays to his enterprises. One person hypothesized that he might be more likely to take a more active interest in the operations of the two businesses that his family controls in the future.
In spite of the fact that in 2019 Murdoch sold the majority of his empire to Disney for a total of $71 billion, he continued to maintain a formidable presence in both the media and politics by utilizing his media channels. He was a frequent unofficial adviser to former President Donald Trump, despite the fact that he distanced himself from Trump in the lead-up to the 2020 election. The relationship between the two men deteriorated even further after Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News predicted that Trump would lose Arizona, an election call that came before other news organizations followed.
Before transitioning into a handful of acting roles in the 1980s and becoming one half of one of the era’s most famous jet-set couples, Hall, who was born and raised in Texas, was recognized as one of the most prominent top models of the 1970s. However, in 1999 she filed for divorce from Jagger, which resulted in a British court agreeing with Jagger’s contention that the couple’s wedding in Bali in 1990 had never been a legally binding ceremony. This brought an end to their twenty-year relationship together. At the time of their annulment, tabloids reported that Hall obtained only a minuscule portion of Jagger’s riches. However, the attorneys for both parties made a joint statement in which they stated that “a mutually agreeable legal and financial settlement has been achieved.”
