We’ve had some pretty trying times in recent years, so a fantasy series like Netflix’s Shadow and Bone, which premiered in April 2021, proved to be exactly the ticket for many a TV enthusiast.
Several months later, Netflix revealed that the fantasy epic had been renewed for a second season, after it had been viewed by a whopping 55 million households in its first 28 days and received an incredible 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now that we’re halfway into 2022, what do we know about Shadow and Bone’s second season?
Recap of Shadow And Bone Season 1
Shadow and Bone is based on Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling novel series and follows Alina Starkov, who begins the tale as a poor cartographer in the war-torn realm of Ravka.
Alina’s experiences begin when she reunites with her childhood friend, Mal, and the two join an expedition aiming to cross the deadly Shadow Fold, an area of impenetrable darkness inhabited by Volcra monsters.
The gang is assaulted by flying creatures on their journey, and Alina unwittingly finds her skills as a Sun Summoner after she unleashes a powerful burst of light to ward off the creatures.
Kirigan, the Second Army’s general, notices Alina’s gifts and offers to assist her in training and honing them.
Kirigan’s actual motivations become clearer as the book unfolds, as he orders the assassination of a magical stag who grants him control over Alina and her abilities.
Kirigan is able to wreak havoc on West Ravka because to Alina’s abilities, which he utilises to shield himself while expanding the Fold and plunging more land into darkness.
Alina’s growing number of allies come to her help in the season 1 finale, and she is able to break free from Kirigan’s grip and flee while the malevolent general is taken away by a Volcra.
However, a wounded Kirigan emerges from the Fold with plans of vengeance in the closing shot of episode 8, and this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.
Shadow And Bone has been renewed for season 2
After the series premiered in April 2021, Netflix quickly ordered a second batch of episodes, with Season 2 of Shadow and Bone being confirmed in June.
While the first season adapted the first book in Leigh Bardugo’s franchise, the second season will focus on Siege and Storm, the second installment in the novel series.
Beyond the impending season 2, there is plenty of room for Shadow and Bone to continue because there are three books in the main franchise plus a slew of spin-off novels that might be adapted in the future if the show’s popularity continues.
In addition to confirming the existence of a second season, Netflix has revealed that Season 2 of Shadow and Bone will consist of eight episodes, the same number as Season 1.
Season 2 filming has begun
The start of production on Season 2 was confirmed in January 2022.
Filming is planned to span five months, according to IMDb, with the final day of shooting set for May 18th.
Season 1 followed a similar filming schedule, with production running from October 2019 until February 2020.
Season 1’s post-production, on the other hand, was severely hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in a release date of April 2021, 14 months after filming completed.
Season 2 has yet to be given a release date, but with production wrapping up in May, it’s unlikely that Shadow and Bone will return until late 2022 or possibly 2023.
New arrivals are welcome in season 2
With each each season, new cast members are introduced, and Shadow and Bone is no exception.
Several additional cast members were announced by Deadline when filming began in January.
Lewis Tan from Mortal Kombat, Patrick Gibson from The OA, Anna Leong Brophy from Traces, and Jack Wolfe from Netflix’s The Witcher are among the newcomers.
The quartet of new arrivals will be taking on the roles of Tolya Yul-Bataar, Nikolai Lantsov, Tamar Kir-Bataar and Wylan Hendriks respectively.
Season 1 of Shadow and Bone is presently streaming on Netflix, while season 2 is in the works.
