Star Trek: Picard Season 2 - All We Should Know So Far!

Season one of Star Trek: Picard has been a long time coming for Trekkies, but there’s some good news to look forward to before the highly anticipated premiere date: There will be more to look forward to in the future.

There’s still a month until Picard’s first season premieres on CBS All Access, but that hasn’t prevented CBS from greenlighting a second season, indicating the network’s confidence in the show’s performance. Following the first season’s 10-episode run, the second will have a 10-episode run as well, with new episodes published weekly.

The second season has already won a stunning $20.45 million in tax incentives from the California Film Commission (via Deadline), which is the largest any small-screen film has ever gotten. When the series was initially announced in 2018, the first season was given $15.6 million from the same program.

When can we expect the second season of Picard?

While the second season of Picard does not yet have an official release date, we may make a guess based on the previous season’s development history. Season 1’s writers’ room met in September 2018, and while the series premiere was originally scheduled for late 2019, it was later pushed back to January 2020.

Since season 2 was given the formal go-ahead in December 2019, it’s reasonable to assume that filming will commence somewhere between the spring and summer of 2020. CBS All Access may plan to start releasing episodes in January 2021, which should be doable — but there are always roadblocks that might cause production to be delayed. We won’t know for sure until we hear anything official, but we’re guessing Picard season 2 will premiere in early 2021.

Picard season 2 will include who in the cast?

Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: Next Generation and in the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis. Given this, it’s a fair bet that he’ll be back for season two.

Isa Briones (American Crime Story), Santiago Cabrera (Big Little Lies), Michelle Hurd (Marvel’s Daredevil), Alison Pill (American Horror Story), Harry Treadaway (Mr. Mercedes), and newcomer Evan Evagora star alongside Stewart; how much of the cast will return for season two is still unknown, and will obviously depend on their characters’ storylines in the first season. The actors may already know who will and won’t be returning when filming for the new season begins, but CBS All Access is keeping their secrets under wraps for the time being.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t note that a few cast members from Star Trek: The Next Generation will feature in the first season, notably Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi and Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, who will each appear in two episodes. (Brent Spiner will also reprise his role as Data in a single episode, however, this is likely to be a flashback given the character’s demise in Nemesis.) Of course, no word on whether these or any other TNG cast members will return for season two, but it wouldn’t surprise us if they did.

What happens in Season 2 of Picard?

The narrative of Picard’s first season is being kept under wraps by CBS All Access, so it’s way too early to predict what we may anticipate in season 2. But one thing is certain: Jean-Luc will boldly go where no one else has gone before.

With the first season’s teaser implying that the show will continue up to where the films left off over two decades ago when Picard retired to his family farm, there’s a clue of how he could be returning to action. A mysterious young woman asks for his assistance, implying that he should know who she is. He is thrust back into the activity he has been missing for so long thanks to her. It’s anyone’s guess whether or not that plot will be carried on beyond the first few episodes.
