The Hustler Plot
“You can’t cheat an honest man” is a guiding principle for a group of grifters in each episode as they practice the art of the “long con,” frequently going after a “mark” whose activities are immoral and illegal or who has a fundamentally negative personality when around people they dislike or who they exploit.
Although they are con artists, the team follows a code of ethics that includes helping those who have been victimized by their mark, often through anonymous financial compensation, and never stealing anything that does not belong to them, preferring to borrow items for the con and then return them afterward.
In order to prepare for each mark, the team does extensive background research to learn about the candidates’ strengths and weaknesses, such as a particular interest or difficulty they are currently facing.
In order to ensure the target does not pursue them, the team creates a scenario, employs a “convincer,” and then stings their target to steal thousands of dollars, before conducting a “blow-off” to ensure the target will not admit to conducting something illegal or because the team has convinced them it will be impossible for them to pursue them.
A subplot that develops over the course of the show or refers to events that occurred in previous episodes is not uncommon, especially in shows where episodes are meant to stand alone.
There is a subplot in the early part of the third season in this regard. When one of the characters discovers what caused their misery, the group is able to pull off some long-term con jobs despite nearly losing everything they have worked for.
