The Matrix, released in 1999, is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time. Keanu Reeves appears as a computer hacker who finds that the environment he lives in is a simulation operated by a malignant artificial intelligence and must collaborate with a crew of hackers to bring it down. Despite the fact that The Matrix had a tremendous influence on pop culture and cinema in general, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were not as favourably regarded.

Thankfully, The Matrix Resurrections is bringing the franchise back to life. This new instalment, directed by Lana Wachowski, one half of the trilogy’s filmmaking pair, finds Neo re-entering the Matrix and trying to reclaim all of his memories. Several characters from the first trilogy will return, but the film will also feature some newcomers. As a result, we’ve put up a simple character reference for The Matrix Resurrections that will tell you not only who the characters are, but also which actors are playing them.

Throughout the trilogy, Neo learns more about the Matrix’s past and finally strikes a deal with the machines to destroy the Smith programme in return for a human-machine ceasefire. Despite the fact that Neo gave his life to eliminate Smith, he is still alive in The Matrix Resurrections.

Keanu Reeves is most known for his roles in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Point Break, and Speed. Following The Matrix Revolutions, Reeves starred in a string of box office flops until 2014, when he was cast as the eponymous assassin in the action film John Wick. Trinity is a member of Morpheus’ real-world squad in the first Matrix film, working to release humanity from the Matrix. She falls in love with one of the released humans, Neo, and her love allows him to resurrect and obtain tremendous manipulating powers within the Matrix, including superhuman agility and the ability to stop bullets in mid-flight. Throughout the trilogy, Neo and Trinity have maintained their romance. In The Matrix Reloaded, he even decides to put her life ahead of humanity’s existence. Trinity, unfortunately, dies in the next film, however, she appears to be living in The Matrix Resurrections.

Carrie-Anne Moss starred in various TV programmes before the original Matrix, including Models Inc., Baywatch, and Due South. Moss went on to feature in films like Memento, Chocolat, and Disturbia, as well as TV episodes including Humans, Jessica Jones, and Tell Me a Story after The Matrix.

Morpheus is a character from the Greek mythology (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II)

Morpheus was played by Lawrence Fishburne in The Matrix trilogy. This figure liberates Neo from the Matrix and reveals his higher purpose as The One. Many speculated that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II would portray a younger version of Morpheus when Warner Bros. published the first teaser for The Matrix Resurrections, which the actor subsequently confirmed on Instagram. “It will make sense when it comes out,” Abdul-Mateen told British GQ of Morpheus’ youthful appearance.

Abdul-Mateen has established himself as a rising prospect to watch in recent years. He’s starred in a number of blockbusters, including Aquaman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Candyman, and is scheduled to reprise his role as Black Manta in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sequel. Jada Pinkett Smith is most known for being Will Smith’s wife, although she has also starred in a number of films and television episodes, including Collateral, Gotham, and Madagascar. Another significant figure from the Matrix sequels is the Merovingian. The Merovingian sees himself as a “trafficker of information” since he has assisted exiled programmes in travelling between the machine world and the actual world to the point that he appears to be a crime boss of sorts.

Lambert Wilson is a seasoned French actor who has performed in a number of French films before The Matrix Reloaded, including The Public Woman, Rendez-vous, and Hiver 54, l’abbé Pierre. He’s also been nominated for several Cesar prizes, the French equivalent of the Academy Awards.

Daniel Bernhardt, a Swiss actor and martial artist, acted in various action films before starring in The Matrix Reloaded, including Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite, Future War, and Perfect Target. Bernhardt has a history of portraying henchmen in action films like John Wick, Logan, and Hobbs & Shaw, thanks to his martial arts expertise.

Bugs is a mystery character that, according to the trailers, is attempting to assist Neo in rediscovering his destiny. She even has a tattoo of a white bunny on her arm!

Jessica Henwick is most recognised for her roles as Nymeria Sand in Game of Thrones and Colleen Wing in Marvel’s Iron Fist, as well as Jess Pava in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. To feature in The Matrix Resurrections, Henwick allegedly had to reject a role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Sati is a Hindu goddess (Priyanka Chopra Jonas)

Tanveer K. Atwal made his screen debut as Sati in The Matrix Revolutions. She is the daughter of Rama-Kandra and Kandra, and she was set to be deleted because she was born without a purpose. Sati’s parents, thankfully, struck a deal with the Merovingian to sneak her into the Matrix without the computers’ knowledge. Sati was promised protection by the Oracle since she thought the kid was significant. According to an Instagram post from Warner Bros. Korea, Priyanka Chopra Jonas will play an older version of Sati in The Matrix Resurrections, indicating that the character may still be essential.

Chopra Jonas rose to fame after starring in the financially successful Bollywood flicks Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Aitraaz. She was cast as the lead in the ABC programme Quantico, making her the first South Asian actress to star in a major network drama in the United States. Chopra Jonas has also starred in films including Baywatch, Isn’t It Romantic, and The White Tiger.

The Observer (Neil Patrick Harris)

In The Matrix Resurrections, Neil Patrick Harris portrays The Analyst. This character is introduced in the first trailer as Thomas Anderson’s therapist, who reveals that he’s “been having nightmares that weren’t simply dreams.” “We don’t use that word in here,” the Analyst says when Anderson wonders whether he’s insane.

Harris is best known for his role as Barney Stinson on the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother, for which he received four Emmy nods. He’s also starred in a number of films, including Starship Trooper, Gone Girl, and the Harold & Kumar series.

Smith is a man of many talents (Jonathan Groff)

In The Matrix Resurrections, Jonathan Groff will reprise his role as Neo’s arch-nemesis, Agent Smith. After the second trailer intercut video of his persona with footage of Smith from the original Matrix, many fans hypothesised, and an electronic press kit backed up this hypothesis. Hugo Weaving played Smith in the first Matrix trilogy, but owing to schedule issues, he was unable to reprise the role.

Groff has a long list of credits in cinema, television, and theatre. In both Disney’s Frozen films, he voiced Kristoff and Sven, and in the Netflix original series Mindhunter, he played FBI agent Holden Ford. In the Broadway production of Hamilton, Groff played King George III.
