The Met Gala Theme 2022 - Details Inside

The Met Gala, called “fashion’s grandest night,” is back at the Costume Institute of New York City’s renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year on the first Monday in May, the event allows celebrities and fashion industry insiders to experiment with costume fashion.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the Met to cancel two years of galas, as it did most other events. The Met Gala, however, returned in September 2021 with updated COVID guidelines, requiring all visitors to produce proof of immunization or provide a negative test.

The celebrations did not finish with the opening of the Met’s doors in the fall. The Met Gala’s 2021 theme was split into two sections, and the second portion was carried over into May 2022. “In America: A Lexicon in Fashion” was the theme for September’s gala, while “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” will be the theme for May’s gala, which will take place at the customary time. Here’s what you can expect from the Met Gala theme in 2022.

What will the 2022 Met Gala’s theme be?

The theme of the 2021 Met Gala was fashion’s role in historical periods in American society, as well as how it transformed in the face of a global pandemic. The 2022 event will now focus on a certain era in American fashion, making it more distinct.

The dress code, “Gilded Glamour and White Tie,” pays reference to New York’s Gilded Age, which lasted from 1870 to 1890. Red-carpet fans should expect to see plenty of corsets, bustles, lavish trains, and over-the-top textures throughout the night, as this was how upper-class ladies dressed almost every day at the time.

“It’s heavily embellished, exaggerated, and structured.” “Kate Strasdin, a curator and fashion historian, spoke to CNN about the Gilded Age. “Compared to how we think about dressing now, it feels so upholstered.””

The Met will debut the exhibition “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” in the period rooms of its American Wing on Thursday, May 5, following the red carpet event on Monday, May 2. Despite the fact that the new collection is distinct from the September exhibit, the museum’s team plans to effortlessly integrate the two.

“Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs, and events that shape our lives,” said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director. “This two-part exhibition considers how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America and explores a multitude of perspectives through presentations that speak with powerful immediacy to some of the complexities of history. In looking at the past through this lens, we can consider the aesthetic and cultural impact of fashion on historical aspects of American life.”

The event in May 2022 will follow the same pattern, with four celebrity co-chairs, including Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will help decide on the guest list, decor, food, and general ambiance. The stars join the honorary chairs of the event, which include fashion designer Tom Ford, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala’s guest list will most certainly include the usual suspects of stylish celebs. Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Zendaya are just a few of the celebrities who have attended the event in the past. This year’s gala, however, will not be attended by all of these fashion icons. Rihanna is now in Barbados, where she is expecting her and A$AP Rocky’s baby.

On its website, Vogue will broadcast a livestream from the red carpet.
