When Seth MacFarlane’s “The Orville,” a science fiction series set onboard a spacecraft exploring the cosmos, premiered in 2017, it was a surprising surprise. MacFarlane’s long-running adult cartoon “Family Guy” has always been his most well-known work. However, the hilarious actor is a lifetime “Star Trek” fan, and it shows in “The Orville,” which felt like a love letter to the classic brand even when leveraging its space exploration concept to unleash dark and strange humor.

“The Orville” examined many of the same philosophical and ethical concerns raised by the finest of “Star Trek” in its first two seasons, the second of which finished in 2019. Even with jokes flowing at warp speed, the program became cerebral, whether it was questioning the function of religion in society or asking whether it may be a good idea to meddle with an extraterrestrial culture’s evolution. “The Orville,” helmed by MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, and its colorful group of characters quickly won many admirers.

Season 2 of “The Orville” ended almost two years ago, and fans have been left wondering what the future holds for the sci-fi comedy program. But, as “The Orville” prepares to release a new batch of episodes, dubbed “The Orville: New Horizons,” we’ve started to get a steady stream of information. So far, we’ve learned all we know about Season 3 of “The Orville,” from the release date to the cast to a sneak glimpse at the trailer.

When will The Orville Season 3 be released?

Despite the fact that filming for Season 3 of “The Orville” began in the fall of 2019, the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak has forced the production to be postponed for more than two years. Before the epidemic shut down film and television projects across the industry, just half of the season had been finished. In fact, the production was forced to stop down in the middle of recording one episode, causing Seth MacFarlane to remark, “One episode is going to be such that characters gain 20 pounds and grow long white beards between one scene and the next” (via The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on YouTube). Season 3 filming was completed in August 2021.

Hulu, on the other hand, stated in February that it had an official date to share with viewers. Season 3 of “The Orville” will premiere on June 2 if all goes according to plan.

Who will appear in Season 3 of The Orville?

The whole opening titles for Season 3’s first episode, which have been graphically updated and show the primary cast, are included in the major trailer for “The Orville: New Horizons.” Fans will be ecstatic to learn that the majority of their favorite characters will return. Seth MacFarlane reprises his role as Ed Mercer, Orville’s hotshot captain, while Adrianne Palicki reprises her role as Commander Kelly Grayson, his first officer, and ex-wife.

The remainder of the crew has already arrived, including Dr. Claire Finn, the ship’s medical officer, and Penny Johnson Gerald. Marcus and Ty, played by BJ Tanner and Kai Wener, come returned as her sons. Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, Mercer’s rather oblivious buddy and fellow officer, is still here.

Lieutenant Commander Bortus, the fan-favorite alien bridge commander, is back, portrayed by Peter Macon behind layers of prosthetics, and Jessica Szohr reprises her role as Lieutenant Talla Keyali, while J Lee returns as Lieutenant Commander John Lamarr. Finally, Anne Winters reprises her role as Ensign Charly Burke and Mark Jackson reprises his role as Isaac, the ship’s biological life-hating robot.

Halston Sage, who previously played Lieutenant Alara Kitan, is sadly missing from the title credits. “The Orville” spent a lot of time focusing on her character, a super-strong yet worried extraterrestrial, but Sage quit the show midway through Season 2.

Lieutenant Yaphit, a sentient glob of mucus-like goo that provided the program with some of its most bizarre humor, was voiced by the late comedian Norm Macdonald. Before his passing, the “SNL” star completed voiceover work for the character, and Yaphit has been confirmed to return for Season 3, making him one of Macdonald’s final jobs (via Deadline).
