Emmy Rossum stars as ’80s Billboard Queen Angelyne in the first trailer for the upcoming Peacock Series.
For Peacock’s forthcoming original series, which premieres on May 19, the Shameless star will take on the famous role of musician Angelyne.
Angelyne depicts an exaggerated account of Angelyne’s life and meteoric ascent to prominence when suggestive photographs of her curvy physique appeared on billboards throughout Los Angeles. However, it also raises the question of how much of Angelyne’s life was shaped by a few advertising.
On Tuesday, Peacock released the first trailer for the series, which featured Rossum, 35, as the viral blonde.
“I’ve known that stardom is my destiny since I was a girl,” Rossum as Angelyne says in the trailer. “Immense, colossal fame.” So I declared, “I’m going to get the world’s affection.”
Angelyne’s public image improves as billboards and advertisements are erected throughout Los Angeles. Fans rush to her, and her story is published in tabloids.
“I’m actually extremely private,” she explains, contrary to popular belief. “It’s something that should be respected.”
Angelyne also features Martin Freeman (Fargo), Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass), Michael Angarano (This Is Us), Molly Ephraim (The Front Runner), Philip Ettinger (First Reformed), Lukas Gage (Euphoria), Charlie Rowe (Rocketman), Alex Karpovsky (Girls), and David Krumholtz (The Deuce).
While the limited series will attempt to stay as close as possible to Angelyne’s true story, it will not be an exact reenactment of her life.
“This isn’t Angelyne’s genuine narrative,” series showrunner Allison Miller explained. “It’s not your typical biopic.” It’s a magical story, an optimistic story, a story about being the person you were meant to be and believing in your own inner strength to actualize your ambitions, inspired by all Angelyne represents.”
Rossum has discussed why she chose the character and what she expects Angelyne will evoke in viewers’ minds.
“As we widen our concept of ourselves as a society, this story raises big questions. Are we defined by our life’s historical facts? Or are we able to define ourselves?” In a statement to Peacock, she stated. “To achieve self-actualization, to embrace who we are on the inside and to live whichever truth seems most true.” Can there ever be one true story when everyone’s experience of reality and truth is unique?”
The actress also discussed her feelings on Angelyne and how much of her own life has gone into the film.
“I’ve been thinking, living, and breathing this project for the better part of four years. “I adore Angelyne,” she went on. “She looks like Marilyn Monroe mixed with an 80s punk Barbie Doll and a dash of new age spirituality in an easy bake oven.”
“She’s a trailblazer, a hustler, a visionary, the original influencer, a living-breathing work of art,” Rossum continued. Here’s a sneak peek at the show. I want you will fall in love with her enchantment.”
