Spiegelman began his career in the mid-1960s at Topps, a bubblegum card company where he spent two decades and co-created parodic series such as Wacky Packages in the 1960s and the Garbage Pail Kids in the 1980s. He rose to prominence in the underground comix scene in the 1970s with brief, experimental, and often autobiographical work. Following the 1977 release of Breakdowns, a collection of these strips, Spiegelman concentrated on the book-length Maus, on his relationship with his father, a Holocaust survivor. The postmodern book, which depicts Germans as cats, Jews as mice, and ethnic Poles as pigs, took 13 years to complete and was published in 1991. It won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1992 and is widely considered as a significant achievement in bringing scholarly attention to the medium of comics.

Spiegelman attended Harpur Student from 1965 to 1968, where he worked as a staff cartoonist and edited a collegiate comedy magazine. Topps hired him as a creative consultant for Gelman’s Product Development Department in 1966, and he began producing trading cards and related merchandise in 1967, including the Wacky Packages line of parodic trading cards.
