With The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lionsgate will premiere their prequel film to The Hunger Games in mid-November 2023, which will be directed by Jennifer Lawrence.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the prequel picture to The Hunger Games, will have its world premiere in November 2023, according to Lionsgate. The Hunger Games trilogy, which ran from 2012 to 2015, was the catalyst for a new generation of young adult novel adaptations, and it has consistently been regarded as the best of them all. The four-film series, which was based on novelist Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, generated an astonishing $2.97 billion in worldwide box office receipts and received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Jennifer Lawrence starred as the franchise’s protagonist Katniss Everdeen, with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Sam Claflin, and Woody Harrelson serving as supporting characters.
In the beginning, Collins wrote only three novels, but she eventually decided to expand the universe of Panem by writing a prequel novel. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which was released in 2020, is about a younger version of Coriolanus Snow (who was played by Donald Sutherland in the films), who was the principal antagonist of The Hunger Games. Even before the novel was released, Lionsgate revealed that it was in the early stages of developing a film version. Francis Lawrence, the director of all previous chapters of the franchise except for the first Hunger Games film, returns to direct this film.
Lionsgate (via Deadline) confirmed that the film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will proceed with production at its CinemaCon presentation. Despite the fact that it still lacks a cast, it does have a release date: November 17, 2023. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will follow the same plot as the novel, which sees Snow, an 18-year-old tribute in the 10th Hunger Games, mentor a District 12 tribute in the film.
It should be noted that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be released around the same time that the majority of the Hunger Games trilogy was released in theaters. Those films enjoyed tremendous popularity around the Thanksgiving holiday, and Lionsgate is certainly hoping to recreate that success with their prequel. As of right now, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is scheduled to open opposite Trolls 3 and John Krasinski‘s film If. In terms of target audiences, it appears like the Hunger Games picture will have the advantage of appealing to a wider range of demographics than the other films, which means it could have a decent chance of winning the holiday box office.
Considering that the film’s release date has been set for late 2023, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will most likely begin production this year. In keeping with prior reports, the movie is expected to start filming sometime in 2022, though it is not yet apparent how close things are to getting underway. Neither Lionsgate nor the studio provided an estimated start date, and while casting may already be underway, no cast members have been confirmed. Nonetheless, Lionsgate is placing a significant bet on this Hunger Games prequel, and it is reasonable to anticipate the movie to gain momentum now. Considering that The Hunger Games is one of the studio’s most popular franchises, and in an era where established IP is king, this prequel is critical to the studio’s long-term survival. Hopefully, the odds will always be in its favor.
