Fletcher was well known for his chess prowess while Depeche Mode was on tour with Blancmange in the early 1980s. In interviews, Blancmange’s Neil Arthur has remarked that he “never won a game of chess with Andy Fletcher!” Fletcher operated the Gascogne eatery in the 1990s on Blenheim Terrace in St. John’s Wood, London. In the middle of the 1990s, he made a number of poor investments that resulted in several financial settlements involving Daniel Miller and Lloyd’s of London.

Alan Wilder, a former member of Depeche Mode, remarked that learning of Fletcher’s passing came as “a true bolt from the blue.”

Fletcher contributed a range of auxiliary synthesizer parts in the studio and live performances, including bass sections, strings, drone noises, and other samples. Only Fletcher did not frequently sing with Depeche Mode. Even while Fletcher may be seen singing in films of prior Depeche live performances, his vocals were typically either very low in the mix or only audible through his personal stage monitors.
