Dana Perino was born in Evanston, Wyoming on May 8, 1972. Perino grew up in Denver, Colorado, and graduated from Colorado State University-Pueblo with a degree in Mass Communications in the mid-90s. She worked for numerous campus stations throughout college, producing and hosting political and public affairs programs. She was also a member of the school’s forensics (competitive speech and debate) team and worked at KTSC-TV, a Rocky Mountain PBS station located on campus. She moved on to the University of Illinois at Springfield for her Master’s degree in Public Affairs Reporting. She was working on her Master’s degree at the time.
She worked as a staff assistant for Rep. Scott McInnis after migrating to Washington, D.C. This led to a position as press secretary for Rep. Dan Schaefer, which she held for nearly four years. She went on to become the Department of Justice’s spokesman in 2001. Perino later served as the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s Associate Director of Communications.
Under George W. Bush, she advanced to the rank of Deputy Press Secretary. In 2007, Perino served as the Acting White House Press Secretary while Tony Snow was undergoing cancer treatment. From 2007 to 2008, she served as full-time Press Secretary. A TV journalist called Munstadhar al-Zaidi hurled two shoes at President Bush at a Baghdad news conference in December 2008, and Perino’s eye was wounded by a microphone stand during the scuffle. From September to January 2009, Perino served as Assistant to the President and White House Press Secretary, when the Bush administration ended and President Obama took office.
Following her departure from the White House, Perino became a political contributor for Fox News. In 2009, she began co-hosting the chat show “The Five.” Later that year, President Barack Obama nominated her to the Broadcasting Board of Governors. Until Stirewalt was dismissed from Fox News following the 2020 presidential election, the show was a weekly series. On Fox News in October 2017, Perino presented “The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino.” She left in early 2021 to join Bill Hemmer as a co-anchor on “America’s Newsroom.”
