Career

After graduating from college, Wright began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Division III University of Rochester. His first employment in Division I collegiate basketball was as an assistant coach at Drexel University in 1986. He worked as Rollie Massimino’s assistant at Villanova from 1987 through 1992. He began working for Massimino at UNLV in 1992 and stayed until 1994.

On March 27, 2001, Villanova hired Wright as its eighth head coach in the program’s 81-year history. Wright took the team to the NIT in his debut season as head coach, despite inheriting a subpar squad from Steve Lappas. In 2002, one of the best-rated recruiting classes in the country was Jason Fraser, a McDonald’s All-American center. The Wildcats’ 2002–03 season was marred by a phone card misuse scandal that resulted in the suspension of more than half of the team’s players.
