Ive went to Chingford Foundation School and subsequently Walton High School in Stafford as a kid. In high school, he was diagnosed with dyslexia.

Ive joined Tangerine, a London-based startup design business, after a year with the Roberts Weaver Group. However, Ive did not love the work because he was frequently forced to work with clients who had opposing viewpoints. During this period, Apple’s Robert Brunner attempted to hire Ive, but Ive declined. Ive did, however, start working with Apple. Ive was a key figure in the development of the PowerBook’s first designs.

Ive was formally recruited by Apple in September 1992, which required him to relocate his family from London to California. Due to Apple’s initial lack of commercial success, his first few years with the company were difficult. After being fired by other Apple executives, Steve Jobs returned to the firm and worked with Ive to try to steer the company in a new path.

In 1997, Ive was promoted to senior vice president of industrial design after Jobs formally returned. The iMac, which was debuted in 1998, was his first major design job in this role. The translucent plastic case of the computer was designed by Ive.

Ive was promoted to Senior Vice President of Design in 2013.  In 2015, he was promoted to Chief Design Officer once more. He took on a more executive job for two years before returning to more creative design responsibilities in 2017.
