Michael van Gerwen born 25 April 1989 is a professional darts player from the Netherlands. He is presently rated third in the world, having previously held the top spot from 2014 to 2021. He has also won the PDC World Championship three times, in 2014, 2017, and 2019. Van Gerwen began darts at the age of thirteen. He became the youngest player to win the 2006 World Masters and throw a televised nine-dart finish at the 2007 Masters of Darts, at the age of 17. Van Gerwen, however, struggled for consistency after his initial burst onto the dating scene until his breakout year in 2012.

At the 2020 PDC World Darts Championship, Van Gerwen was once again seeded first. He breezed into the quarter-finals, recovering from a first-set loss to Jelle Klaasen in the second round to win, before going on to defeat Ricky Evans and former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting in back-to-back 4–0 victories. He beat Darius Labanauskas 5–2 in the quarter-final to reach the semi-final for the eighth time in eight tournaments. He defeated Nathan Aspinall 6–3 to get to the final against Peter Wright. Van Gerwen was beaten 7–3 in the final.

Van Gerwen lost in the first round of the 2020 Masters to Jonny Clayton, ending his five-year reign as event champion and a 20-match unbeaten streak at the Marshall Arena. He won the UK Open for the third time in March, defeating Gerwyn Price in the final 11–9. He smashed his seventh professional broadcast nine-darter in the semi-finals against Daryl Gurney on his way to the final. For the sixth time, he won the Players Championship Finals in November, defeating Mervyn King 11–10 in the final.

Van Gerwen won 3–1 over Ryan Murray to start his 2021 PDC World Darts Championship campaign, averaging 108.98 points in the process.
He came back from a 1–3 deficit in the last 16 to overcome Joe Cullen 4–3 and go to the quarter-finals. Dave Chisnall whitewashed him 0–5 in the quarter-finals. Following Gerwyn Price’s Global Championship triumph, Van Gerwen dropped to second place in the world standings.

Van Gerwen then went on to lose in consecutive TV tournaments, falling to Jonny Clayton in the Masters and Luke Humphries in the semi-finals of the UK Open. Van Gerwen then went on to win the Premier League but was defeated in the semi-finals by eventual winner Jonny Clayton.
