Her mother was in and out of jail on a regular basis, and while incarcerated, she gave birth to her youngest child. As a result, Perez was nurtured by her aunt for a short time before being placed in foster care and group homes away from her siblings. Perez moved in with her paternal aunt after her father’s custody claim was denied. Grover Cleveland High School in Queens was her next stop. Her mother died of AIDS-related complications in 1999.
Perez began her professional career as a dancer on the television show “Soul Train” in the early 1980s. She was a biology major at Los Angeles City College, but she dropped out due to her passion of dancing on the show.
Perez made her television debut in 1990 in an episode of “21 Jump Street,” a police procedural series.
