Wally Amos’ Net Worth

Wally Amos has a net worth of $20,000 and is an American television personality, entrepreneur, and author. He created the Famous Amos chocolate chip cookie company. He’s also the author of ten books.

Early Life

On July 1, 1936, Wally Amos was born in Tallahassee, Florida. He was raised there until he was 12 years old when he went to New York City with his aunt Della Bryan following his parents’ divorce. Wally began cooking at a young age, and his Aunt Della taught him how to make chocolate chip cookies. After dropping out of high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Amos served at the Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 1954 to 1957, earning his GED along the way before being honorably dismissed from the military.

Career

Amos returned to New York after college and became the first African American talent agent for the William Morris Agency, representing Diana Ross & The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and Simon & Garfunkel. Amos began attracting fresh talent and clients by sending them homemade chocolate cookies and a meeting invitation.

In 1975, Amos opened a cookie business in Los Angeles. Marvin Gaye and Helen Reddy lent him $25,000 to start their company. Los Angeles’ first Famous Amos cookie store debuted in March 1975. The cookie store, like Amos, earned quick fame and popularity in just five years. In 1981, Amos was so famous that he starred in a “Taxi” episode called “Latka’s Cookies.”

By 1982, Famous Amos had made $12 million. That’s $30 million today.

Amos was being engaged all throughout the country to deliver motivational talks at this time. Sadly, this would be the company’s greatest success. A few years later, sales fell and the company lost money. Wally sold interests in the company to keep it viable. Amos was forced to sell the Famous Amos Company in 1994 and founded Uncle Noname’s Cookie Company with Lou Avigonne, which became Uncle Wally’s Muffin Company in 1999. The muffins are available in over 3,500 locations countrywide.

In 2014, Amos relaunched his cookie firm as The Cookie Kahuna, a sadly short-lived enterprise situated in Hawaii, where he was living at the time. The cookies are available in two flavors: plain chocolate chip and chocolate chip with pecans and macadamia nuts. In 2019, NBC affiliate KSNV-TV in Las Vegas dubbed Amos “The King of Cookies.” “The Great Cookie Comeback: reBaking Wally Amos,” a documentary by Jeff MacIntyre about Amos’ life, was released in 2020.
