The first generation of video gamers are more than aware of the name Atari; after all, they were behind titles such as Pac-Man and Pong. However, it appears they are now diversifying their portfolio, and the new addition to their list would be cryptocurrency.
The cryptocurrency dubbed “Atari Token” was apparently “made without cash disbursement by Atari.” This was made possible by the Atari Interactive acquiring 15% stake in Infinity Networks, Ltd. Atari has licensed its brand name to the Gibraltar-based firm, and they will take care of developing the digital entertainment platform set in motion by the Atari Token.
The name “Atari Token” is not new; previously Atari had created the same, to act as a currency for its in-game purchases.
The Atari chairman and CEO Frederic Chesnais said, “Our aim is to take strategic positions with a limited cash risk, in order to best create value with the assets and the Atari brand.” Guess, we will have to wait and watch to see what will this new avatar of the Atari Token do for the brand and the purpose it will serve.
Atari also has plans to integrate cryptocurrencies through Pariplay, Ltd with which it has a branding partnership. There are also chances that Atari will create another token, and it will get used in its online casino venture.
The statement as translated from the original by the Coindesk reads, “To broaden the appeal of these new casinos, and once the Atari Token available, Atari has the project to launch Pong Token, a second token dedicated to crypto-casinos and usable on these gaming sites. The details of this launch of crypto-casinos will be announced soon.”
One is not entirely sure, what Atari plans to do with this move but the collective appears to be quite bullish about the possibilities.
At a very rough overview, it’s attempting a revival of sorts, by banking on the cryptocurrency craze that’s doing rounds.
Chesnais said, “Blockchain technology is poised to take a very important place in our environment and to transform, if not revolutionize, the current economic ecosystem, especially in the areas of the video game industry and online transactions.”
