Enrique Tarrio Is Sentenced to 22 Years, Setting A Record Among January 6 Rioters

Former Proud Boys Chairman Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday, on September 5, 2023, for his role in seditious conspiracy and leading an unsuccessful effort to hinder the transition of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. District Judge Timothy Kelly handed down the most extended sentence to date in relation to the events of January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol.

During the sentencing proceedings, Tarrio, attired in an orange jumpsuit and slip-on sneakers, stood before a crowded courtroom, visibly affected as the judge imposed the lengthy prison term. Notably, three other leaders of the Proud Boys had been found guilty of seditious conspiracy and were sentenced the previous week.

Prior to this sentencing, the longest prison term related to the January 6th events had been 18 years, which was handed down last week to Ethan Nordean, a co-defendant of Enrique Tarrio. A similar 18-year sentence was also given in May to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers militia, who was found guilty of sedition in connection with the Capitol breach.
