Early Life
Richard Kevin Harrison, the son of Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr. and Joanne Harrison, was born on March 22, 1965, in Lexington, North Carolina. Richard is the third of three children. He had an elder sister, Sherry, who died when she was six years old, and a younger brother, Chris. His father served in the US Navy. Harrison’s father was transferred to San Diego when he was two years old, and the family relocated. Harrison began having epileptic seizures at the age of eight. Harrison went to San Diego’s Taft Middle School, but dropped out during his sophomore year to pursue his “$2,000-a-week business of selling knockoff Gucci bags.” In April 1981, the Harrisons relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Career
Harrison’s father launched his first secondhand store in Las Vegas in 1981, after the family had migrated there. On Las Vegas Boulevard, the first Gold & Silver Coin Shop was a 300-square-foot hole in the wall. During the day, Harrison worked in his father’s store. He repossessed cars late at night. The store relocated to a larger location in downtown Las Vegas in 1986. Unfortunately, the Harrisons’ lease on that space expired in 1988. The store was then relocated to a new commercial structure on Las Vegas Boulevard. Harrison and his father have discussed turning the coin shop into a pawn shop for years. It appeared to them to be a natural progression of their business. That wasn’t easy, though, because a 1955 legislation in Las Vegas limited the number of new pawn shop licenses issued depending on the city’s population. By 1988, the greater Las Vegas metro region had a population of approximately 640,000 people. Every week, Harrison contacted the city’s statistician in order to apply for one of the city’s rare and desired pawn licenses as soon as the population of Las Vegas reached the next milestone that made those licenses available.
After his pawnshop was featured in a 2001 PBS documentary and on the popular Comedy Central show Insomniac with Dave Attell in 2003, Harrison spent four years promoting the concept of a television show about it. The concept was floated around HBO and YouTube until the History Channel came calling and evolved it into Pawn Stars, which is currently the History Channel’s highest-rated show. Pawn Stars premiered in July 2009 and has aired for 17 seasons and 577 episodes as of June 2020. The History Channel’s Pawn Stars is by far the most popular show on the network. The show is so successful that History renews it in 80-episode increments, which is unprecedented for any television show, let alone a reality show.

Harrison’s girlfriend Kim became pregnant when he was 17 years old. The couple decided to marry despite a miscarriage. On April 27, 1983, their first child, Corey, was born. Adam, their second child, was born two years later. Harrison and Kim divorced soon after Adam was born.

On a blind double date nine months later, Harrison met Tracy, the woman who would become his second wife. They moved in together after six months of dating, married eight months later, and took on the job of raising Corey and Adam. They eventually divorced.
