Amazon's Invincible - Latest Updates on Release Date, Cast, and Plot in 2022

Superhero stories are undoubtedly the most popular type of entertainment right now, and as a result of their enormous popularity over the previous several decades, things have grown rather intriguing within the genre. Both the Deadpool flicks and Amazon’s The Boys series have deconstructed superheroes in brutal and spectacular ways.

Even something as mainstream as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to take some very fascinating turns in the near future, as the series dives headfirst into parallel universes with films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film.

With so much innovation going on, it’s only natural for studios to be on the lookout for the next big hero to plunder from the pages of comic books and convert into a household brand. This appears to be the case for Amazon’s new Invincible series, which is based on the superhero created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley.

Kirkman has previously had excellent success converting his other comic book work, The Walking Dead, into a TV series, so it’ll be intriguing to see whether he can do the same with Invincible.

To summarise, if you enjoy superhero stories, you won’t want to miss the current animated series. Here’s everything we’ve learned thus far about Amazon’s Invincible.

When will Invincible be released?

Since early 2018, we’ve known that an Invincible series was in the works, but news has been scarce. That all changed when show creator Robert Kirkman sat down for an exclusive Livestream to talk about the upcoming series, and it turns out that the youthful superhero will make his animated debut a lot sooner than you would have expected.

In addition to sharing a clip of Mark Grayson / Invincible (Steven Yeun) playing a superpowered game of catch with his father, Nolan Grayson / Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), Kirkman also revealed that the first three episodes of the show will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 26, 2021, with the remaining five episodes (for a total of eight episodes) following on Fridays.

Unlike other streaming services, Amazon has experimented with different timetables in the past, most notably with The Boys season 2, which had the same weekly schedule. The response from fans has been varied, but Kirkman appears to be enthusiastic about the potential to extend the show, adding in the Livestream, “When you release the entire season on the same day, your friends’ first question is always, “Oh my gosh, have you seen this?” It’s awe-inspiring.’

‘Oh, I’m only on episode 3 right now.’ ‘How are you doing?’ ‘I’m on episode 2 right now.’ The dialogue then comes to a halt… You get to experience it on a weekly basis if you do it this way… People have plenty of time to watch the show.”

Invincible will put your patience to the test, but it promises to be well worth the wait.

Who’s in the cast of Invincible?

Invincible boasts one of the best casts we’ve ever seen. We’ve already discussed how Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons will lead the series, and Sandra Oh, who will voice Debbie, the last member of the Grayson family, will join them. Fans of the comic books will be pleased to learn how Battle Beast, Invincible’s most renowned for, will appear in the series, voiced by Michael Dorn.

If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, you’re in for a treat.

In addition to Yeun, Kirkman looks to have brought over a slew of other cast members from the horror show, including Lauren Cohan, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lennie James, and Michael Cudlitz.

With Seth Rogen, Mahershala Ali, Jon Hamm, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Mae Whitman, Djimon Hounsou, Clancy Brown, and Gillian Jacobs in the cast, it’s almost as if this program was made to make viewers say, “Hey, I remember that voice.” There’s a lot more A-list talent behind the scenes, so keep an eye on the show to see who else appears.

What’s the story behind Invincible?

With the synopsis we have for the series thus far, there isn’t much to go on in terms of plot. On the surface, it appears uncomplicated, as we follow Mark Grayson as he struggles under the weight of his father, Nolan, who is truly Omni-Man, Earth’s strongest superhero. However, once Mark reaches the age of 17, he begins to see that he is acquiring his own set of abilities, requiring him to follow in his father’s footsteps and become Invincible, his own superhero.

Fans of the comics, on the other hand, are aware that this seemingly basic premise leads to some bizarre (and dark) twists as the story progresses. There are no spoilers here.

Since the first issue of the Invincible comic book in 2003, he’s been a part of some pretty epic events, from the Flaxan invasion of Earth, which resulted in the Viltrumite War, to joining numerous heroic squadrons. If Amazon renews the series for more seasons, it might go in a variety of directions. If enough people tune in on March 26, it might become the streaming platform’s next flagship series.
