Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has grossed more than $150 million at the global box office just one week after its release in theatres outside of Japan.
The popularity of the prequel film would have surprised many film critics and fans who were unfamiliar with the Jujutsu Kaisen series or anime in general.
The anime community, on the other hand, knew all too well how successful the film could become, especially for those of us who liked season 1 of the TV series.
Fans around the world are ecstatic to learn that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has now grossed more over $150 million at the global box office, just one week after its international release.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 hits The Global Box Office
Last year, on Christmas Eve, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 premiered in Japanese theatres to a rapturous response from local audiences.
Over 15,000 people attended the film’s inaugural midnight showing, which grossed 2.694 billion yen ($23.5 million) in its first three days in Japan.
In fact, by the end of the film’s theatrical run in Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 had surpassed the equally great Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time as the highest-grossing Japanese picture of 2021.
Surprisingly, the picture has surpassed Your Name, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and, of course, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to become the 20th highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history.
The anime prequel film finally appeared in theatres in Europe and North America on March 19th, 2022, with the global public clearly eager to see it on the big screen.
The film would have a phenomenal opening weekend in both the United Kingdom and North America, just trailing Robert Patterson’s The Batman in terms of box office receipts.
The Numbers states that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has made nearly $150 million at the global box office by March 25th, one week after its global theatre launch; $18 million domestically and $132 million overseas.
“There are some nice shake-ups in this weekend’s box office charts, led by the very strong debut of anime tie-in/manga adaptation Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. It opened in second place with $14.8 million, a little less than half of what The Batman made in its third week ($36 million, for a total of $300 million), but that’s a big-budget American superhero movie, not an imported anime feature.” – Sam Barsanti, via AV Club.
The anime’s second season is set to return in 2023
With the success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 not just in Japan but also around the world, fans are understandably eager for the TV series to return.
Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen is set to premiere in 2023, as announced at the Jump Festa event in February.
After the Weekly Shonen Jump News Twitter page made an error in their first announcement, there was significant uncertainty online regarding whether the series would return as part of the Winter programming slate, i.e., January 2023.
However, this information was immediately corrected, and Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 is expected to premiere in either April or July 2023.
