Mauch didn’t play in his first year at North Dakota State (NDSU), so he got a redshirt, and he was finally moved from tight end to the offensive line. As a redshirt freshman, he played in six games while NDSU won the 2018 FCS national title. Mauch played in all 16 of the Bison’s games as a redshirt sophomore. He was on special teams and lined up at tight end in some positions to act as a sixth offensive lineman as the team won the national championship for the second time.
Mauch became a starter in the second game of his reserve junior season. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the season was cut short and played in the spring of 2021. He made the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) second team. The Associated Press named him first-team All-MVFC and second-team All-American after he started all 15 of NDSU’s games as the Bison won the FCS national title for the second time.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, college athletes who played in the 2020 season were given an extra year of eligibility. Mauch chose to return to NDSU for a sixth season and use that extra year.
