Fans were shocked when talk show presenter Ellen DeGeneres, who had a successful comedy career, came out as a lesbian in 1997. Her dating history, nevertheless, has subsequently gained some notoriety.
After coming out, the comedian’s first romance in the public eye was with the actress Anne Heche. The ex-lovers began dating in March 1997, and their relationship garnered media attention.
When I fell in love with Ellen DeGeneres, my narrative advanced equal rights, the actress said during her appearance on Dancing With the Stars in October 2020. “At the opening of my movie Volcano, I announced that Ellen would be my date. I was informed that my Fox contract would expire. I went to the premiere with Ellen, but I was escorted out and told I couldn’t attend the afterparty for fear of being photographed with a lady. It was incredible.
“I was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres for three and a half years, and the stigma linked to that relationship was so awful that I was dismissed from my multimillion-dollar picture agreement and I did not work in a studio picture for ten years,” the I Know What You Did Last Summer actress continued.
After more than three years of dating, the two parted ways in August 2000. When it comes to relationships, “What do you want and what do I want?” is a fork in the road that many of us have experienced. Previously, Anne spoke with Entertainment Tonight. “Her and my intentions were different, which is why we parted ways.”
From 2001 through 2004, Ellen dated photographer Alexandra Hedison. She began dating actress Portia de Rossi after they split up, and nearly four years later, the adored pair married at their Los Angeles home.
Ellen had two meaningful relationships before she came out. The first was with Kat Perkoff, whose tragic passing in a vehicle accident in 1980 is thought to be what made the comic come up with his “Phone Call to God” performance. Her career was propelled to popularity by the segment. The future A-lister began dating producer Teresa Boyd eight years later, but the couple broke up in 1996.
