“Violence in all of its forms is corrosive and destructive,” Smith tweeted a day after hitting a comedian onstage at the Oscars.

Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock a day after slapping him onstage during the live Academy Awards broadcast, saying his actions were “inexcusable.”

“Violence is poisonous and harmful in all forms.” Smith posted on Instagram on Monday, “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was disgusting and inexcusable.”

After making a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, before presenting the award for best documentary feature, the stunning moment occurred during Sunday’s Oscars ceremony. Pinkett Smith was said to be working on a sequel to G.I. Jane, with Rock implying that she was referring to the actress’ shorn head. (Alopecia is a condition that Pinkett Smith has openly discussed.)

Smith stormed the stage and slapped Rock across the face. “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking lips!” he snarled at Rock as he returned to his seat.

Will Smith Apology To Chris Rock

Later in the evening, Smith apologized to the Academy and fellow candidates, but not to Rock, while accepting the Oscar for best actor for his part in King Richard, in which he plays Richard Williams, father of tennis legends Venus and Serena. However, the comic received an apology in Monday’s Instagram post.

“It’s part of the job to make jokes at my expense,” he wrote, “but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to handle, and I reacted emotionally.” “I’d like to make a public apology to you, Chris.” I was both out of line and incorrect. I’m embarrassed, and my actions do not reflect the guy I aspire to be. Violence has no place in a world of love and peace.”

In addition to the Williams family and “my King Richard family,” Smith apologized to the Academy, the show’s producers, and the people who were watching from the crowd both in person and at home.

“I am profoundly sorry that my actions have marred what has otherwise been a beautiful journey for all of us,” he wrote. “I’m still working on myself.”

Rock has made no public comments about the incident other than what he stated onstage afterward: “Amazing, wow… “Will Smith just struck me in the face.”

The Academy had previously criticized Smith’s actions, opened a complete formal investigation into the situation, and planned a full board of governors meeting for Wednesday. “We will consider further action and repercussions in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law,” the Academy stated in a statement.

Prior to Smith’s post, Richard Williams informed NBC News through his son Chavoita Lesane: “We don’t know all the circumstances of what transpired.” But unless it’s in self-defense, we don’t allow somebody to hit another person.”
