Who Are the Main Characters in Downton Abbey: A New Era?
The cast of the new Downton Abbey film is as follows:
Maggie Smith plays Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham and matriarch of the wealthy family. At Downton Abbey, Violet Crawley is as sharp as a tack and as quick-witted as they come, and she frequently butts heads with her more progressive daughter-in-law and other headstrong ladies in the family.
Robert Crawley, 7th Earl of Grantham, is played by Hugh Bonneville. Robert Crawley is a respectable employer who grew up in Downton Abbey and takes great care of his employees. On occasion, Robert, as a representative of old-world aristocracy, feels torn between modern principles and a strong sense of tradition.
Elizabeth McGovern portrays Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham and Robert’s wife. Lady Grantham is brave, determined, and… American. Despite being an heiress in her own country, Cora has adapted to the British aristocracy while maintaining her rebellious temperament.
Lady Mary Talbot, Robert and Cora Crawley’s eldest daughter, is now married to Henry Talbot, played by Michelle Dockery. After facing her own grief and heartbreak, Mary’s unwavering love for Downton Abbey has lead her to a life of happiness.
Laura Carmichael portrays Edith Pelham, Marchioness of Hexham, formerly Lady Edith Crawley. Edith is Mary’s younger sister and the second child of Robert and Cora. Edith had a series of terrible luck in love before marrying Bertie Pelham. Edith has a child from a previous relationship with whom her family has made peace.
Isobel Grey, Lady Merton, a Crawley relative who frequents Downton Abbey, is played by Penelope Wilton. Violet, the estate matriarch, and Isobel, a nurse with modern and progressive ideals, are constantly at conflict.
Tom Branson, the family’s first chauffeur, is played by Allen Leech. Tom married the youngest Crawley daughter and spent some time with her in Ireland before she passed away. Tom has returned to Downton Abbey with his little daughter and is now a loyal and essential member of the Crawley family.
Joanne Froggatt plays Anna Bates, the Crawley family’s woman maid. Anna has known Mary for a long time and has worked and lived at Downton Abbey with her. Anna and her husband, John Bates, a fellow Downton employee, now live in a cottage on the estate.
Brendan Coyle plays John Bates, sometimes known as Mr. Bates. After serving in the war with Robert Crawley and suffering a leg injury, Mr. Bates now works as the Earl’s personal valet.
Lesley Nicol plays Beryl Patmore, the head of the Downton Abbey kitchen. As the chief cook and maid supervisor, Beryl has formed a strong maternal bond with Daisy.
The estate’s long-serving butler, Charles Carson, or Mr. Carson, is played by Jim Carter. Mr. Carson’s father worked on Downton Abbey, and he takes satisfaction in following in his family’s footsteps. Mr. Carson is especially close to Mary, the eldest Crawley daughter, and he and his employee Elsie live on the grounds.
Phyllis Logan plays Elsie Carson, formerly Mrs. Hughes, the chief housekeeper on Downton Abbey. Mrs. Carson is a no-nonsense woman who runs the household with efficiency and isn’t afraid to say what she thinks, especially to Mr. Carson.
Robert James-Collier portrays Thomas Barrow, the under-butler in Downton Abbey. After serving in the war and pursuing numerous ideas, Mr. Barrow became a figure in and out of the Downton household. Mr. Barrow, who is now a permanent part of the Crawley family, is still trying to establish his loyalty.
