The classic KonoSuba anime series has been confirmed to return with season 3 after more than five years gone from our screens.

Despite the fact that the second season ended on March 16th, 2017, KonoSuba is still one of the most popular and beloved anime shows in the world.

There aren’t many anime franchises with a more iconic cast of characters than KonoSuba, with Kazuma, Aqua, and the rest of the gang probably being among the most well-known protagonists in the industry.

While anime viewers are accustomed to long gaps between seasons, it can reach a point where the hope for a return becomes a fear of cancellation. Thankfully, the anime gods have smiled on us today with the announcement of KonoSuba season 3!

KonoSuba season 3 was formally confirmed today, May 28th, at a Japanese special program event livestreamed on the KADOKAWAanime YouTube page.

A spin-off anime based on the light novel series “An Explosion on This Wonderful World” will also be produced, in addition to the season 3 announcement.

While the announcement that season 3 is in the works is one of the most exciting anime news stories of the year so far, the series’ eventual return was all but certain due to the show’s global success and abundance of source material.

Five complete volumes of Natsume Akatsuki’s original manga series have been converted in between two seasons of the anime series and the theatrical film.

Konosuba Season 3 - Confirmed!

The good news is that 17 light novel and 15 manga volumes have been released in Japan as of May 2022, with the most recent installment debuting on May 9th, 2022. This means there’s enough material for four more anime seasons and several more feature films!

Then there’s popularity, which KonoSuba has in spades both domestically and globally, with the series even being regarded as a cult classic as a result of its worldwide success.

Season 1 received an 8.12/10 rating on MyAnimeList, with over 1.1 million reviews, and season 2 followed suit, receiving an 8.28/10 rating with 877,000 reviews!

KonoSuba’s production team had already expressed interest in making a season three years prior. Two of the anime’s voice actors confirmed in 2017 that they were working on a new KonoSuba project. While most of us mistook this for a reference to season 3, it was actually a reference to the upcoming film ‘Crimson Legend.’

Season 3 “has a decent possibility,” according to a Kadokawa producer, if the film succeeds (which it did). Finally, the official KonoSuba Twitter feed announced in July 2021 that a new anime project is in development.

Unfortunately, it is yet unknown if this new project will be a third anime season or a second feature film. The tweet did, however, imply that a “follow-up report” on the franchise’s future would be released soon… After a year, we finally got the season 3 announcement.

Regrettably, the Japanese website and Twitter account for KonoSuba season 3 did not provide an international release date. However, given the magnitude of the current surprise and the clues of production dating back almost a year, there is reason to believe that season 3 will premiere much sooner than anticipated.

“It’s probable that the groundwork for KonoSuba Season 3 has already begun,” Anime Geek speculates, “since anime productions take years to build.” Although it may be claimed that transferring animation studios for the film freed up Studio DEEN, the core cast and crew from the first two seasons, as well as J.C. Staff, were all involved in the project.”
