The Magnificent Mrs. Maisel is coming back to Amazon Prime Video this month, but the wait has been long since the third season premiered in December 2019.
Season 4 picks up where Season 3 left off, so viewers who don’t recall what happened to Midge (Rachel Broshanan) and the other Mrs. Maisel characters at the end of Season 3 may be puzzled.
What happened to Midge’s status as Shy Baldwin’s (LeRoy McClain) back-up? What happened to Tony Shalhoub’s Abe and Marin Hinkle’s Rose? And how did Joel (Michael Zegen) get into the sleazy nightclub industry in the first place? All of these issues will be addressed in Season 4’s early episodes, so keep reading to find out more.
What Happened in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season 3?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s second season ended on a cliffhanger, with Midge and Joel having a one-night stand. Midge leaves his house in the midst of the night to follow Shy on a USO tour, so anyone hoping for a reconciliation between the two was disappointed by the first episode of Season 3, which begins with Midge leaving his house in the middle of the night to accompany Shy on a USO tour.
Midge had never done a job like this before, and the stand-up comedian’s interactions with varied types of audiences was a recurring theme throughout Season 3. She learned that not every joke will work in every setting when travelling with Shy.
Abe, Midge’s father, has been laid off from his job at Columbia, forcing him and his wife Rose to live with Moishe (Kevin Pollak) and Shirley, Joel’s parents (Caroline Aaron). Expect plenty of squabbling, as the show has done from its inception. Things start to look up once Abe finds a job at The Village Voice as a journalist.
In the meantime, Joel spends Season 3 trying to get into the club scene. He comes upon a fantastic place and believes himself fortunate to have found it at such a low price. He is completely unaware that an illegal casino is functioning beneath his structure. He decides to pursue a relationship with Mei (Stephanie Hsu), a relative of the wicked ones, which further complicates matters.
Midge considers her love alternatives with Shy now that Joel is no longer in the picture and life on the road is growing increasingly lonely. During a sailing trip, the two become closer, but he does not show up for his gig that night. Midge catches him beaten up by a male date on the yacht where they spent the day. He begs her to keep his sexuality hidden because the early 1960s were not exactly a welcoming environment for gay entertainers, let alone Black ones.
To be honest, Midge does a horrible job of keeping Shy’s secret safe. When Shy’s manager Reggie (Sterling K. Brown) sees her getting nervous before a performance at the Apollo in Harlem, he advises she talk about her time on tour with Shy to make her set work for that audience. She achieves this by making jokes about his sexual orientation.
Midge and her boss Susie (Alex Borstein) are left on the tarmac as Shy flies to his next destination, which is understandably disturbed.
Midge and Susie are reeling from what could be the end of both of their careers as Season 4 premieres the following night.
Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will premiere on February 18 with two episodes per week.
