Outlander, the Starz time travel drama, has always been a love letter to Scotland, despite its hot loves and violent wars. Not only is the show shot there (according to The Scotsman), but it’s also attributed to a surge in visitors to the UK’s far north (via BBC). The popular show is getting a spin-off now, but it’s not what we expected.
In June 2020, Starz officially announced a new show starring Jamie Fraser and Dougal MacKenzie, starring Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish. This new venture, however, is a travel docu-series, rather than a scripted series starring the characters they play on Outlander. Men in Kilts follows the two actors on a road journey across Scotland, taking in some of the country’s most breathtaking natural sights while learning more about the country’s history and culture. We won’t be following Claire (Caitriona Balfe) or any of the other characters from the program in their ongoing exploits, but we will get a closer look at the people who play them.
When will Men in Kilts be available to buy?
Starz has teased viewers about the upcoming drama Men in Kilts by releasing some details. They didn’t say when the show will premiere, though. Only “Coming Soon” is mentioned in the promotional materials for the new show.
“Coming soon” is unlikely to inspire confidence in anyone with the film and television industries still on hold, but there is some positive news. In an interview with OprahMag.com in 2019, Heughan revealed some details about the yet-to-be-announced show. “We’ve finished shooting, and should I say, it looks incredibly enjoyable,” he told the publication.
When will we be able to see Men in Kilts? Although we cannot be certain, the show is expected to premiere before the end of 2020.
On Men in Kilts, who will appear?
Men in Kilts will follow the exploits of Heughan and McTavish and is expected to include a slew of knowledgeable and spirited specialists along the road. There’s no word yet on whether any of their fellow Outlander stars will make cameo cameos, but fingers crossed.
Clan Lands, which Heughan created in 2019, was the inspiration for the show. He told OprahMag.com that the podcast started off as a side project, but after he started producing visuals to go along with it, he decided it could be a TV show instead. Heughan stated in an interview that the show will be, “Essentially, it’s a road trip around Scotland with my co-star Graham McTavish, who is a character in his own right. We’d been pretending to be Highland warriors for years and thought, “You know, it’d be wonderful to learn more about it.””
In addition to all of the fantastic travel advice and historical knowledge, the show appears to be focusing on the two central characters.
Men in Kilts: What Can You Expect?
While we won’t be witnessing the storyline twists and startling character deaths that Outlander is known for, there are a few elements to explore about what we can anticipate seeing on Men in Kilts.
According to a report from TVLine, Starz has already teased a couple of the places Heughan and McTavish would travel in the series. The two will travel to Glencoe (or Glen Coe), a Highland valley that was the site of a historically significant massacre during one of Scotland’s most ferocious clan feuds (via Encyclopedia Britannica). They’ll also go to the Battle of Culloden, which was depicted in Outlander.
Men in Kilts promises to take a closer look at Scottish history and culture, including chatting with local historians and trying out the crafts of traditional artisans, in addition to visiting major historic locations. “The series adds meaning and texture to Highland culture and history, weaved together, much like the plaid for which Scotland is so famous,” Starz original programming head Christina Davis claimed in a statement to TVLine.
