The Grey's Anatomy - Scenes That Got the Most Attention

“Grey’s Anatomy” characters have seen many highs and lows over the course of 18 seasons. While “Grey’s Anatomy” has plenty of on-call room romances, gorgeous doctors, strange medical abnormalities, cutting-edge procedures with both miraculous and tragic outcomes, and comedic situations like the inadvertent consumption of marijuana cookies, it is at its best when it is hurting our hearts.

In the long-running medical drama, there’s no shortage of sorrowful moments. The plane crash that claimed the lives of Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), Cristina Yang’s (Sandra Oh) departure, the death of Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), and April Kepner’s (Sarah Drew) first child, or a grieving Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) lying on the bathroom floor following Denny Duquette’s (Katherine Heigl) (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). “Grey’s Anatomy” devastates fans at every step based on those moments alone.

Season 17 of “Grey’s Anatomy” is arguably the most heartbreaking since it incorporates the pandemic’s real-life terrible impacts into several stories. As Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) struggles for her life, the show utilizes her struggle to survive COVID-19 as a spark for a tear-jerking sequence.

Fans were moved by Meredith’s idea of a seaside wedding.

Meredith reunites with her spouse (albeit in a dream form) and soulmate Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) in Season 17, Episode 2, “The Center Won’t Hold,” but it’s their beach wedding in Season 17, Episode 13, “Good as Hell,” that had viewers in tears. Derek fantasizes about a beach wedding, and it finally happens in Season 5, Episode 24, “Now or Never,” where they write their vows on a Post-it note.

Fans rushed to social media to express their views about Derek and Meredith’s second-chance nuptials, which are virtually a carbon copy of a drawing by the couple’s youngest daughter, Ellis, that hangs on Meredith’s refrigerator.

Derek tells Meredith in Season 5, Episode 23, “Here’s to Future Days,” that they’ll marry in the Bahamas someday, and a photo of their Season 17 unplanned wedding. They posted, “MERDER RECEIVED THEIR DREAM WEDDING.” Another admirer, @nvm27ac, shared similar photos with the caption “DEREK REALLY MAKES HIS WORDS COME TRUE I CANT — ” and two crying-face emojis on Twitter.

For “MerDer” fans still mourning the neurosurgeon’s death in Season 11, Episode 21, “How to Save a Life,” the entire episode is a powerful emotional roller coaster. Despite Meredith’s best efforts, it is clear that her heart, as well as the hearts of her followers, will always belong to Derek. @merderlife_, a third watcher, tweeted photos of Derek and Meredith writing their Post-it vows, as well as photos of their beach wedding, with the message, “This is forever.”

Grey’s Anatomy’s 17th season has a lot of heart.

Meredith’s unconscious mind is responsible for numerous painful reunions in Season 17 of “Grey’s Anatomy.” George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), Sloan, and Lexie all give Meredith a glimpse into the afterlife, as well as reasons why she needs to return to the living to be with her children.

The scenes between Derek and Meredith, on the other hand, are particularly memorable. Meredith, caught between staying with her husband and being at peace or leaving their children behind, gets to watch one of her and Derek’s unfulfilled fantasies come true, even if it isn’t real.

MerDer’s wedding wasn’t the only topic of conversation on Twitter. The couple’s romantic meeting sparked a lot of discussion on Reddit. “I can’t image Meredith ending up with anybody other than Derek,” remarked u/feed-my-dog-sir. “Part of me wants Meredith to die this season because I can’t imagine her ending up with anyone other than Derek.” “I’m torn between the kids and wanting my MerDer ending, even if it’s in beach heaven,”.

Meredith, of course, takes the correct decision, because what is “Grey’s Anatomy” without its titular character? At the very least, fans can take solace in the idea that Meredith and Derek’s tear-jerker wedding will live on even if Derek is no longer with us.
