The Last Kingdom Season 5 - Everything You Should Know in 2022

When the BBC dropped The Last Kingdom after season 2, Netflix stepped in to save the show, renewing it for a third and fourth season, the latter of which will premiere on April 26, 2020. Fans had to wait two years between seasons three and four, but it’s a little price to pay to keep the lively comedy alive and streaming.

The show is based on Bernard Cornwell’s long-running historical fiction book series, The Saxon Stories. Cornwell’s epic series has spanned 12 volumes so far, with the thirteenth – and last – book set to be later this year. The first four seasons of The Last Kingdom ripped through the source material at breakneck speed, adapting two books per season.

The Netflix series has reached roughly the same point in time as the eighth Saxon Stories installment, 2014’s The Empty Throne, at the end of season 4.

Cornwell has stated that the Battle of Brunanburh, a pivotal 10th-century battle that signaled the end of meaningful Danish occupation in England, will be the conclusion of his book trilogy. With the addition of key characters like Edward’s (Timothy Innes) son Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths), the Danish Jarl Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurarson), and Uhtred’s brazen daughter Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) to the Netflix series in season 4, it appears likely that the TV series will follow in the footsteps of the books. Uhtred, on the other hand, has a long way to go to get there. Here’s all we know about the rest of his voyage so far.

When will season 5 of The Last Kingdom be released?

Netflix has yet to order season 5 of The Last Kingdom, but considering the success of the series and all of the creative high notes hit by season 4, it would be surprising if it didn’t. Uhtred’s personal quest to reclaim his inheritance and the wider story of England’s union under Aethelstan, the first historical King of England, receive no resolution in the season 4 finale. All the evidence points to Uhtred needing to ride for the Saxons at least once more.

By crunching the figures, we may be able to make an educated bet about the timing of Netflix’s season 5 announcement. Season 3, the first Netflix-produced season, premiered on November 19, 2018. Netflix renewed the series for season 4 just over a month after it premiered. This sparked an 18-month production cycle that culminated in the season 4 premiere last month.

If the past is any indication, a decision on Season 5 will be made in the coming weeks. That decision is expected to be followed by yet another lengthy production cycle, meaning we won’t see new episodes of The Last Kingdom until at least Fall 2021.

Who is in Season 5 of The Last Kingdom’s cast?

The Last Kingdom introduces and kills characters at a breakneck speed, but the show is anchored by a core cast of characters, many of whom are expected to return for season 5. The series’ leading man, Alexander Dreymon, has certainly cemented his legacy as Saxon warlord Uhtred Ragnarsson. Finan (Mark Rowley) and Sihtric, Uhtred’s two right-hand troops, are also set to return (Arnas Fedaravicius).

Aethelstan, King Edward’s unacknowledged eldest son and future King of England, will most likely have to be recast. Although Caspar Griffiths, a young and gifted actor, did an excellent job in season 4, Aethelstan will have to mature considerably between seasons if he is to stand with Uhtred in the shield wall.

What happens in season 5 of The Last Kingdom?

As the seasons progressed, The Last Kingdom strayed further from its original material. Several significant events and people have been changed or removed entirely, making it more impossible to predict where the showrunners are heading. Season 5 is set to adapt the ninth and tenth novels in Bernard Cornwell’s series, Warriors of the Storm (2015) and The Flamebearer (2016), respectively.

Season 4 ends in a similar area to where Warriors of the Storm begins, albeit via a different route. Uhtred has once again put his life and the lives of his troops on the line to defend Wessex, and he has paid a heavy price for his loyalty. His daughter, Stiorra, is now married to Jarl Sigtryggr of Denmark, who reigns over Northumbria from the great hall in Eoferwic (modern-day York). As tensions between the Saxons and the Danes rise once more, Uhtred will be torn between his devotion to Edward and Aethelflaed and the protection of his own daughter in York.
