On November 28, 1962, Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz was born in New York City. His mother, Marian, was a teacher and educational consultant, and his father, Donald, taught physics at The College of New Jersey and Thomas Edison State College. His whole family is Jewish, and they all came to the United States from places like Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. He is the second child out of four.

When Stewart was 11, his parents got a divorce. After that, he and his father didn’t see each other much. Because of how bad things were between them, he started going by his middle name, “Stuart,” instead of his last name. He grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and went to Lawrence High School there. He went to The College of William & Mary in Virginia to continue his education. There, he majored in psychology and played soccer for the school’s team. He worked as a contract administrator for the City University of New York, a soccer coach at Gloucester High School in Virginia, a bartender, a caterer, a busboy, and as a contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services after he graduated from college.
