Kyrsten Sinema was born in Tucson, Arizona, on July 12, 1976. She is the middle child of Dan and Marilyn. She comes from Dutch people. When she was young, her parents broke up, and her mother married someone else. With her family back together, Sinema moved to DeFuniak Springs, Florida. There, her stepfather lost his job, which caused the family home to be taken away.
So, for three years, they lived in a closed-down gas station. Sinema went to school at Walton High School, where she graduated as the top student when she was 16 years old. She went on to get her BA from Brigham Young University in 1995. Sinema went on to get her Master of Social Work from Arizona State University in 1999 and her JD from ASU’s College of Law in 2004. She went back to ASU in the end to finish her Ph.D. in justice studies.
Sinema first got involved in politics in 2000, when she helped Ralph Nader run for president. She ran for local office as an independent for the next two years and lost both times.
Sinema was a part-time professor at ASU in 2003. She taught classes on policy and writing grants. She was also a part-time teacher of business law at Arizona Summit Law School. Sinema began working as a criminal defense attorney after receiving her JD.
