Madeleine Albright Early Life
Albright was given the name Marie Jane Korbelova when she was born on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Josef Korbel, a Czech ambassador, and Anna Korbel, her mother, are her parents. Katherine and John, her younger sister and brother, are her siblings. Her parents converted to Catholicism from Judaism in 1941 and reared their children as Roman Catholics. For her father’s job, the family traveled to Britain, where they resided in London during World War II, surviving some of the worst of the Blitz. In 1948, the family moved from the United Kingdom to the United States. Albright’s father was able to secure a post as a political science professor at the University of Denver, subsequently rising to the position of dean of international relations at the university.
Albright grew up in Denver and attended Kent Denver School before enrolling at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where she received her bachelor’s degree. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1957 while she was there. In 1959, she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Albright met Joseph Medill Patterson Albright while interning at “The Denver Post” during a summer break from college. Soon after she graduated from Wellesley, the couple began dating and eventually married. After that, the couple went to Chicago, where Albright worked as an editor for “Encyclopaedia Britannica,” before moving to New York City, where her husband started working for “Newsday.” They moved to Washington, DC, a year later, when Albright enrolled at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies to study international affairs and Russian. When the pair returned to New York City the next year, she continued her studies at Columbia University. In 1975, she received a certificate in Russian, as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia.

Her marriage to Joseph Albright in 1959 resulted in the birth of three daughters before the couple divorced in 1982. She had converted to the Episcopal Church at the time of her marriage. In an article by “The Washington Post,” Albright learned about her parents’ Jewish ancestry, which they had kept hidden from their children after their conversion to Catholicism. Three of her grandparents were killed in the Holocaust, she subsequently discovered.
Albright is the author of several books, including the memoir “Madam Secretary,” which was published in 2003. “The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs,” “Read My Pins,” “Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War,” and “Fascism: A Warning” are among her other works.
