You give us information when you utilise these services. So we want to be clear about what data we gather, how we use it, who we share it with, and how you may view, update, and remove it.
We Gather Information
We collect information in three basic categories:
- Information you provide.
- Information we get when you use our services.
- Information we get from third parties
Here’s some more information about each of these groups.
Information You Provide
When you use our services, we collect information you give us. So we may need to gather information such your name, username, password, email address, phone number, and date of birth in order to provide you with our services. We may also ask for extra information like a profile image or Bitmoji avatar that will be publicly available on our platforms. Some services, like commerce products, may demand a debit or credit card number and account details.
Of course, you’ll also send us information via our services like Snaps and Chats. Remember that users can store or copy your Snaps, Chats, and other material outside the app. So, use common sense when using our services: don’t send messages or share content you wouldn’t want saved or shared.
To better serve you, we collect information from you when you contact customer support or otherwise engage with us.
Information We Get When You Use Our Services
When you use our services, we track which ones you used and how you used them. We could know you watched a Story, viewed an ad, and sent a few Snaps. Here’s a breakdown of the data we collect when you use our services:
Our services acquire information about your behaviour. We may, for example, collect data on:
utilising our services, like which filters you use on Snaps, which Discover Stories you watch, if you use Spectacles, or which search queries you enter.
What information do you share with other Snapchatters? Who do you share information with? (such as when you open a message or capture a screenshot).
We collect content you generate on our services, such as custom stickers, and information about that content, such as whether the receiver has viewed it and its metadata.
We acquire data from and about your devices. So we collect:
advertising identifiers, unique application identifiers (UAI), apps installed (UDI), browser type (keyboards), language, battery level (time zone), and advertising identifiers;
sensor data from your device, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, microphones, and headphones;
such as your mobile phone number, service provider, IP address, and signal strength.
Because our services are all about connecting with friends, we may gather phonebook information from your device.
Camera And Photos
Many of our services require us to capture photographs from your device’s camera. To transmit Snaps or upload photographs from your camera roll, we need access to your camera or photos.
We may collect location data when you use our services. Permission is required to collect information about your specific location using GPS, wireless networks, cell towers, Wi-Fi access points, and other sensors like gyroscopes and accelerometers.
Cookies And Other Technologies Collect Data
When you use our website, we collect information like:
- details about how you’ve used our services;
- device information, such as your web browser type and language;
- access times;
- pages viewed;
- IP address;
- identifiers associated with cookies or other technologies that may uniquely identify your device or browser; and
- pages you visited before or after navigating to our website.
Information We Collect From Third Parties
Usage data, affiliate data, and third-party data may be collected. Examples:
By linking your Snapchat account to another service (like Bitmoji or a third-party app), you authorise us to receive information from that service.
Advertisers, app developers, publishers, and other parties may also share data with us. This data may be used to assist target or measure the effectiveness of adverts, among other purposes. Please visit our Support Center for more information on how we use third-party data.
A user’s contact list may be combined with other data we have about you if they submit their list.
