Francis Ngannou was born in the city of Batié in Cameroon on September 5, 1986. He was from a poor family and only learned the basics in school. When Ngannou was six years old, his parents split up, and he moved in with his aunt.

When he was only 10, he started working at a sand quarry. Ngannou was asked to join more than one gang, but he said no. Instead, he put all of his energy into training to be a boxer. Ngannou started boxing training when he was 22. A year later, he had to stop because he got sick.

He worked odd jobs for a few years before deciding to move to Paris, France, and train to become a professional boxer. Ngannou’s early progress was slowed because he had to spend two months in a Spanish prison for illegally crossing the border. When he got to Paris, he had no choice but to live on the streets for a while.

Ngannou was eventually put in touch with Cameroonian MMA fighter Fernand Lopez and the MMA Factory, a training center in Paris. Lopez let Ngannou use the Factory for free to train and stay with him. Lopez also gave Ngannou some MMA gear.

Ngannou joined the world of mixed martial arts in November 2013. He mostly fought in the French promotion 100% Fight, but he also took part in smaller European shows. During this time, Ngannou went 5-1.

After joining the UFC, Ngannou fought Luis Henrique in December 2015, who was also new to the organization. Ngannou won the fight by knocking out his opponent in the second round.

At UFC Fight Night 86 in April 2016, he fought an unknown fighter named Curtis Blaydes and won by a technical knockout in the second round. A few months later, Ngannou fought Bojan Mihajlovi, who was also a new fighter and beat him with a technical knockout in the first round.

At UFC Fight Night 102 in December, Ngannou beat Anthony Hamilton by submission, which earned him his first UFC Performance of the Night bonus. Early in 2017, he kept winning by knocking out Andrei Arlovski at UFC on Fox 23 and getting his second straight Performance of the Night bonus.

In December 2017, Ngannou’s biggest fight to that point was at UFC 218 against the experienced Alistair Overeem. In their famous fight, Overeem was knocked out by Ngannou in the first round. This is widely considered to be one of the most brutal finishes in MMA history.

This fight was the first of eight fights he had agreed to do with the UFC. At UFC 220, which took place in early 2018, Stipe Miocic won the UFC Heavyweight Championship. This was his second loss. At UFC 226, which took place in July, Ngannou lost to Derrick Lewis.
